What is Claude Code Notifications?

Claude Code Notifications is a powerful integration for Openclaw Skills designed to keep developers informed when Claude requires attention. It bridges the gap between terminal-based AI agents and the macOS Notification Center, ensuring you receive immediate alerts for permission prompts, idle status, or MCP interactions.

Whether you are working directly on your Mac or inside a remote devpod, this skill ensures Claude never stays idle waiting for your input. By leveraging terminal-notifier and SSH reverse tunnels, it provides a seamless feedback loop for high-velocity coding workflows.

Claude Code Notifications Use Cases

  • Receiving real-time alerts when Claude Code needs manual permission to execute a command.
  • Getting notified when background tasks are waiting for user elicitation or additional context.
  • Routing notifications from remote devpod environments to a local Mac workstation via secure SSH tunnels.
  • Maintaining productivity by allowing Claude to work in the background without needing to constant terminal monitoring.

How Claude Code Notifications Works

  1. The skill installs a local listener via launchd that monitors a specific port (19876) for notification requests.
  2. When Claude Code triggers a notification hook, the notify.py script sends data to this local listener.
  3. For remote devpod environments, an SSH reverse tunnel forwards notification requests from the remote server to the local macOS listener.
  4. The listener invokes terminal-notifier to trigger a native macOS alert with optional sound cues.
  5. Built-in fallback mechanisms like OSC 9 ensure notifications reach the user even when using terminal multiplexers like tmux.

Claude Code Notifications Setup

Please ensure you are running these steps on your local macOS machine. Openclaw Skills work best when configured correctly from the host machine.

# Navigate to the skill directory
cd ~/.claude/skills/claude-notifications/

# For local-only setup
python3 scripts/setup_notifications.py

# For local and remote devpod setup
python3 scripts/setup_notifications.py --devpod <your-ssh-host>

After running the script, you must manually enable notifications for your Terminal (e.g., Warp, iTerm2) and Script Editor in macOS System Settings under Notifications.

Claude Code Notifications Data Schema & Taxonomy

Component Path Description
Notification Script ~/.claude/scripts/notify.py Core script triggered by Claude Code hooks.
Listener Service ~/.claude/scripts/notify-listener.py Background service handling incoming alerts from local or remote sources.
Launchd Config ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.claude.notify-listener.plist Manages the lifecycle and persistence of the listener service.
Hook Config ~/.claude/settings.json Stores the notification hook mappings for permission, idle, and elicitation prompts.

Claude Code Notifications Advanced Features

  • SSH Reverse Tunneling: Seamlessly route alerts from remote cloud environments back to your local machine.
  • Tmux Passthrough: Advanced support for notifications inside tmux sessions using OSC 9 sequences.
  • Custom Sound Alerts: Ability to trigger specific macOS system sounds (e.g., Glass) for different notification types.
  • Multi-Host Support: Configure multiple devpod hosts simultaneously to unify your Openclaw Skills experience.
