What is Claude Skill Sync?

Claude Skill Sync is a specialized developer utility designed to maintain perfect parity between your local AI agent environments. By targeting the standard skill directories of both Claude Code and OpenClaw, it identifies missing components and logic discrepancies. This tool is essential for maintaining a unified set of Openclaw Skills, ensuring that your custom automation workflows remain consistent regardless of which coding assistant you are currently using.

The skill performs deep content analysis of SKILL.md files, looking beyond simple timestamps to compare actual logic through text normalization. This ensures that only meaningful changes are synced, reducing clutter and preventing accidental overwrites in your development environment.

Claude Skill Sync Use Cases

  • Synchronizing newly developed agent capabilities from Claude Code to OpenClaw.
  • Migrating existing Openclaw Skills into the Claude Code environment for local testing and validation.
  • Identifying and resolving logic discrepancies between different skill versions across platforms.
  • Streamlining the developer workflow when switching between different AI coding agent interfaces.

How Claude Skill Sync Works

  1. The utility scans the ~/.claude/skills/ directory to index all available Claude Code skills and their underlying logic.
  2. It concurrently scans the ~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/ directory to build a registry of existing Openclaw Skills.
  3. A normalization engine processes the SKILL.md files, stripping whitespace and handling line-ending differences (LF vs CRLF) to ensure accurate comparison.
  4. Skills are categorized into four distinct states: Claude Code Only, OpenClaw Only, In Sync, or Conflict (different content for the same name).
  5. A comprehensive report is generated for the user, detailing exactly what needs to be updated or resolved.
  6. Using interactive prompts, the user can choose to perform bidirectional updates, including the automatic generation of required metadata files.

Claude Skill Sync Setup

To start synchronizing your environment, simply invoke the skill through your AI agent interface. Ensure your local directories are in their default locations.

# Trigger the synchronization process
claude-skill-sync

The skill will automatically navigate the ~/.claude/ and ~/.openclaw/ paths to begin the comparison.

Claude Skill Sync Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages a specific file structure to ensure compatibility across both agent platforms:

File Location Purpose
SKILL.md Both Contains the core logic, instructions, and frontmatter for the skill.
_meta.json OpenClaw Contains versioning and slug metadata specific to Openclaw Skills.

During conflict resolution, the skill extracts the first 5 lines of the body content from each SKILL.md to provide a safe preview for user decision-making.

Claude Skill Sync Advanced Features

  • Smart content normalization to prevent false-positive conflict detections during sync.
  • Automated generation of _meta.json files when migrating skills to OpenClaw.
  • Interactive conflict resolution mode with side-by-side content previews.
  • Batch processing support with 'all' and 'skip-all' flags to streamline the management of multiple Openclaw Skills.
  • Security-first design that keeps sensitive credentials and absolute paths out of the synchronization logs.
