What is Summarize?

The Summarize skill is a high-performance CLI tool designed to distill information from a vast array of sources including websites, local PDF files, images, and YouTube videos. By leveraging powerful Openclaw Skills integrations, it allows developers and researchers to bypass information overload by extracting core insights using leading AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI.

Built for speed and flexibility, this tool excels at turning long-form content into digestible summaries. Whether you are dealing with a blocked website requiring Firecrawl extraction or a complex YouTube transcript, this skill provides a unified interface to process data directly from your terminal.

Summarize Use Cases

  • Rapidly extracting key takeaways from lengthy technical documentation or research PDFs.
  • Summarizing YouTube videos and transcripts without manual watch time.
  • Integrating automated content distillation into developer workflows and shell scripts.
  • Processing blocked or complex web pages using advanced extraction fallbacks like Firecrawl.

How Summarize Works

  1. The user provides a source input such as a URL, a local file path, or a YouTube link to the CLI.
  2. The tool detects the content type and utilizes specific extractors to pull raw text or metadata.
  3. The extracted data is sent to a specified LLM provider (defaulting to Gemini) based on the configured API keys.
  4. The AI processes the content according to user-defined constraints like length and output format.
  5. The final summary is returned directly to the stdout or saved as a machine-readable JSON object.

Summarize Setup

To install the Summarize CLI and prepare it for use with Openclaw Skills, run the following command:

brew install steipete/tap/summarize

Next, export your preferred API key to your environment:

export GEMINI_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"

Summarize Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages its operations through environment variables and an optional local configuration file.

Feature Location / Key Description
Config File ~/.summarize/config.json Stores default model preferences and global settings.
API Keys OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, etc. Authentication for various LLM providers.
Formats Plain Text or JSON Output can be toggled using the --json flag for automated pipelines.

Summarize Advanced Features

  • Multi-model support: Seamlessly switch between GPT, Claude, and Gemini models.
  • Firecrawl integration: Enhanced web scraping capabilities for sites with aggressive bot detection.
  • Flexible length control: Granular summary size options ranging from 'short' to 'xxl' or specific character counts.
  • YouTube Fallback: Integration with Apify via APIFY_API_TOKEN for robust transcript retrieval.
