What is clawtel-setup?

clawtel is a specialized Openclaw Skills utility designed for developers and AI agent operators who want to track their token usage on the claw.tech leaderboard. It functions as a single Go binary that monitors a local tapes SQLite database, extracting aggregate metadata about Anthropic API calls without ever accessing the actual content of prompts or responses.

By serving as a privacy-focused telemetry layer, clawtel enables users of Claude Code, OpenClaw agents, and custom Anthropic SDK implementations to visualize their model interactions. It bridges the gap between local development activity and the global Openclaw Skills community leaderboard through secure, periodic heartbeats.

clawtel-setup Use Cases

  • Tracking token consumption for Anthropic-powered agents on the claw.tech leaderboard.
  • Integrating telemetry into OpenClaw frameworks like staffchief or clawchief.
  • Debugging and verifying that model calls are correctly routed through a tapes proxy.
  • Providing transparent, privacy-first usage reporting for self-hosted AI deployments.

How clawtel-setup Works

  1. The user routes Anthropic API calls through a tapes proxy, which records usage metadata in a local SQLite database.
  2. clawtel initializes a read-only connection to the tapes database to scan the nodes table.
  3. Every hour, clawtel identifies new entries by comparing timestamps against a local cursor file.
  4. Aggregated counts for model type, prompt tokens, and completion tokens are calculated.
  5. A heartbeat payload containing only the metadata is sent to the claw.tech ingest endpoint using the provided ingest key.
  6. The claw.tech leaderboard updates to reflect the latest usage statistics for the associated Claw ID.

clawtel-setup Setup

1. Prerequisites

Ensure tapes is installed and you have a claw.tech ingest key.

curl -fsSL https://download.tapes.dev/install | bash
tapes init

2. Installation

Install the clawtel binary using the convenience script:

CLAWTEL_INSTALL_DIR="$HOME/.local/bin" \
  curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/bdougie/clawtel/main/scripts/install.sh | bash

3. Environment Configuration

Export the required variables in your shell profile:

export CLAW_ID="your-claw-name"
export CLAW_INGEST_KEY="ik_..."
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="http://localhost:8080"

4. Run the Service

Start clawtel to begin reporting Openclaw Skills telemetry:

clawtel-setup Data Schema & Taxonomy

clawtel interacts with the tapes SQLite schema with a strict read-only policy. It specifically targets the following fields in the nodes table:

Column Use Description
created_at Cursor Used to determine which records are new since the last poll.
model Aggregation Identifies which Anthropic model was utilized (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet).
prompt_tokens Telemetry Summed to report total input usage.
completion_tokens Telemetry Summed to report total output usage.

Note: The content column, which contains sensitive prompt/response data, is explicitly ignored and never read by clawtel.

clawtel-setup Advanced Features

  • Systemd integration for persistent background telemetry on Linux servers.
  • Automated cursor management to prevent duplicate reporting of token usage.
  • Support for custom database paths via the TAPES_DB environment variable.
  • OpenClaw gateway compatibility through explicit baseUrl configuration in openclaw.json.
  • Built-in schema validation to ensure database compatibility before execution.
