What is Courier?

Courier is a robust notification infrastructure platform designed for product and engineering teams to streamline communication across multiple channels. By providing a single API to design and send notifications via email, SMS, push, and in-app messaging, it removes the complexity of managing individual provider integrations. This integration within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem allows developers to leverage AI agents for managing notification logic, improving user experience through consistent and timely communication.

The skill operates via the Membrane framework, which simplifies the developer experience by handling authentication, credential refreshing, and secure connectivity. This ensures that your Openclaw Skills can interact with Courier data and services reliably without manual overhead or secret management vulnerabilities.

Courier Use Cases

  • Automating multi-channel notification delivery for application events.
  • Managing and updating message templates and versions programmatically.
  • Synchronizing user profiles and recipient lists for targeted communication.
  • Monitoring message delivery status and auditing logs via AI-driven queries.
  • Building custom notification workflows that trigger across email, SMS, and push channels simultaneously using Openclaw Skills.

How Courier Works

  1. The user installs the Membrane CLI to facilitate communication between the local environment and the Courier API.
  2. Authentication is performed using a tenant-based login system that identifies the specific agent type for optimized tooling.
  3. A secure connection is established to the Courier platform, with the system handling OAuth or API key negotiation.
  4. Developers use natural language intent to search for specific actions, such as sending a message or creating a list.
  5. The AI agent executes the chosen actions or uses a transparent proxy to make direct API calls, with Openclaw Skills ensuring all headers and security tokens are correctly injected.

Courier Setup

First, install the required CLI tool:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your environment by specifying the agent type:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Ensure a connection to the Courier service is active:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.courier.com/" --json

If the connection state is not READY, use the following command to wait for the setup to complete:

npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json

Courier Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill interacts with the following primary data entities within the Courier ecosystem to facilitate Openclaw Skills workflows:

Entity Description
Profile Contains user-specific contact information and notification preferences.
Template Defined structures for messages, including multi-channel versions.
List Groupings of recipients for batch notification operations.
Automation Pre-defined workflows that trigger notification sequences based on events.
Message Individual records of sent notifications and their delivery status.
Webhook Integration points for receiving real-time event data from Courier.

Courier Advanced Features

  • Natural Language Intent Search: Find the exact API capability needed using descriptive queries within Openclaw Skills.
  • Automated Credential Lifecycle: Server-side management of auth tokens ensures long-running automations never fail due to expiration.
  • Transparent Proxy Layer: Send raw requests to any Courier endpoint with automatic base URL and header injection.
  • Intelligent Action Discovery: Pre-built actions include built-in pagination and error handling logic.
  • Multi-Agent Optimization: Tailored tooling adjustments based on the specific client name provided during setup.
