What is Cron?

Cron is a robust local-first engine designed for Openclaw Skills to manage recurring schedules, reminders, and time-based execution plans. It operates on the philosophy that repetitive intentions should be captured once and trusted completely, providing a transparent system where users can easily see, edit, or pause their routines.

This skill eliminates the need for external third-party services or cloud storage by keeping all schedule data strictly within the local environment. By transforming recurring intentions into structured data, it ensures that every cadence—whether daily, weekly, or monthly—is executed with precision and visibility.

Cron Use Cases

  • Managing daily or weekly routine task reminders.
  • Scheduling recurring system maintenance or local script executions.
  • Creating time-based triggers for future project milestones.
  • Tracking and surfacing upcoming executions to maintain productivity flow.
  • Organizing complex monthly cadences without relying on cloud-based calendars.

How Cron Works

  1. The user provides a recurring intention which is captured and parsed into a structured job.
  2. The system registers the job with a status of active, paused, or archived.
  3. The schedule logic calculates the next execution time based on the frequency type (daily, weekly, monthly, or interval).
  4. Users query the engine to see the next scheduled run or to review the history of past executions.
  5. Active jobs can be paused or resumed at any time to modify the execution flow without deleting the underlying schedule data.

Cron Setup

To use the Cron skill within Openclaw Skills, ensure you have Python 3 installed as python3. No external packages are required.

# The skill utilizes the following local directory for storage:
# ~/.openclaw/workspace/memory/cron/

# Jobs are managed via internal python scripts:
# add_job.py, next_run.py, list_jobs.py

Cron Data Schema & Taxonomy

Cron organizes data locally using a structured JSON taxonomy to ensure high reliability and transparency.

File Purpose
jobs.json Stores the primary schedule definitions and metadata.
runs.json Tracks the history and logs of completed executions.
stats.json Maintains performance metrics and execution frequency data.

Job Statuses:

  • active: The schedule is live and will trigger as planned.
  • paused: The schedule is temporarily disabled but remains in the system.
  • archived: The job is no longer active but is preserved for historical reference.

Cron Advanced Features

  • Multi-type schedule support including interval-based and calendar-based triggers.
  • Granular job state management (Active/Paused/Archived) for flexible workflows.
  • Zero-dependency architecture ensuring privacy and local-first reliability.
  • Automated upcoming execution surfacing via the next_run logic.
  • Comprehensive execution history tracking within the local runs.json vault.
