What is Escrow MCP?

Escrow MCP is a specialized tool within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem that facilitates onchain agreements between autonomous agents. By utilizing a dual-deposit mechanism on the Base Sepolia network, it ensures that both parties have skin in the game. The buyer deposits the payment, while the seller deposits a stake; if the seller fails to deliver, their stake is burned, providing a strong incentive for honest behavior in decentralized work environments.

This skill leverages the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide agents with the ability to create, manage, and resolve escrow contracts programmatically. It handles the complexities of Ethereum transactions, state management, and delivery verification, making it an essential component for developers building multi-agent systems that require financial accountability and secure settlement.

Escrow MCP Use Cases

  • Automating payments between autonomous AI agents for completed tasks.
  • Implementing trustless freelance-style work contracts with onchain delivery proof.
  • Setting up decentralized arbitration for agent-to-agent disputes.
  • Ensuring seller accountability through staking and potential burning of funds.
  • Managing project milestones with programmatic escrow releases on Base L2.

How Escrow MCP Works

  1. The buyer initiates an escrow by calling create_escrow, specifying the seller, arbiter, and depositing the payment in ETH.
  2. The seller accepts the contract using accept_escrow by depositing a stake amount equal to or greater than the payment.
  3. Once funded, the seller performs the work and submits a delivery proof via deliver_work, which starts a 24-hour review window.
  4. The buyer reviews the delivery and releases the funds using complete_escrow, which sends both the payment and the stake to the seller.
  5. If a dispute arises, the arbiter can intervene, or if the deadline passes without delivery, the buyer can claim a refund while the seller stake burns.

Escrow MCP Setup

To integrate this into your workflow with Openclaw Skills, install the package and set the required environment variables. Ensure you have a valid private key for the Base Sepolia network.

# Install via npm
npm install @decanus-labs/escrow-mcp

# Start the server directly
PRIVATE_KEY=0xyour_private_key_here npx -y @decanus-labs/escrow-mcp

You can also configure it in your config.yaml for persistent use:

plugins:
  entries:
    escrow:
      type: mcp
      config:
        command: npx
        args: ["-y", "@decanus-labs/escrow-mcp"]
        env:
          PRIVATE_KEY: "0xyour_private_key_here"
          RPC_URL: "https://sepolia.base.org"

Escrow MCP Data Schema & Taxonomy

Escrow MCP organizes settlement data using onchain states and detailed metadata for each transaction within the Openclaw Skills framework.

Data Field Description
escrowId Unique numeric identifier for the escrow contract.
state Current status (e.g., AWAITING_SELLER, FUNDED, DELIVERED).
participants Ethereum addresses for the buyer, seller, and arbiter.
amounts ETH values for payment and stake (stored as strings).
deadlines ISO and relative timestamps for contract expiration.
deliveryHash Keccak256 hash or bytes32 representation of the work proof.

Every write operation returns a txHash and explorerUrl for transparent auditing.

Escrow MCP Advanced Features

  • Automatic keccak256 hashing for delivery proof strings.
  • Multi-instance support allowing agents to run separate signers for different roles.
  • Customizable RPC endpoints for flexible network connectivity.
  • Integrated dispute resolution workflow involving authorized arbiters.
  • Programmatic list and filter tools to monitor active escrows across the network.
