What is Hotbutter Voice Skill?

Hotbutter Voice Skill serves as a communication bridge between your local terminal and a web-based voice interface. By utilizing this addition to your Openclaw Skills library, you can interact with your AI agents using natural language speech rather than manual typing. It routes data through a hosted relay, allowing for a seamless connection between the browser's native speech recognition capabilities and your local execution environment.

This skill is designed for developers who want a quick, convenience-focused way to add a voice layer to their AI workflows. While it uses a hosted relay for ease of use, it remains compatible with the core openclaw architecture, ensuring that your local agent logic remains the primary engine for task execution.

Hotbutter Voice Skill Use Cases

  • Controlling Openclaw Skills via voice commands while hands-free during development.
  • Implementing text-to-speech responses for AI agents to provide audio feedback.
  • Prototyping voice-enabled AI assistants without setting up complex local audio drivers.
  • Accessing local agent functionality from mobile devices via the browser-based relay interface.

How Hotbutter Voice Skill Works

  1. The skill initiates a WebSocket connection from your local machine to the Hotbutter relay server.
  2. A unique pairing code and session URL are generated and displayed in your terminal.
  3. You open the URL in a browser, which handles the local audio processing and speech-to-text conversion.
  4. Transcribed text is sent through the relay to the voice-bridge running on your machine.
  5. The skill executes the openclaw agent command locally and captures the text response.
  6. The response is sent back through the relay to the browser, where it is converted to speech via the Web Speech API.

Hotbutter Voice Skill Setup

To get started with this skill, ensure you have the core openclaw CLI installed on your system PATH. Follow these steps to initialize the voice bridge:

# Start the voice bridge using the default hosted relay
voice-bridge start

# Or start with a custom agent name for the UI
voice-bridge start --agent-name "Assistant"

On the first run, you will be prompted for an optional email address which is stored locally in ~/.hotbutter for session persistence.

Hotbutter Voice Skill Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Hotbutter Voice Skill manages data across local and relay environments to facilitate the voice loop. Use the table below to understand the data taxonomy:

Data Type Handling Storage Location
Raw Audio Processed in Browser Never transmitted
Transcripts Transmitted via WebSocket Relay Transit
Agent Output Captured from STDOUT Relay Transit
Configuration Local Filesystem ~/.hotbutter
Binary Execution Local Machine openclaw path

Hotbutter Voice Skill Advanced Features

  • Custom Relay Support: Use the --relay-url flag to point the skill to a self-hosted relay for increased privacy.
  • Session persistence: Integration with openclaw session IDs allows for context-aware voice conversations.
  • Multi-device pairing: Generate unique codes to connect different browser clients to a single local agent instance.
  • Identity Management: Customizable agent display names to differentiate between various Openclaw Skills in the voice UI.
