What is Context Engine?

Context Engine is a robust state-management solution designed to eliminate the 'blank slate' problem when starting new AI sessions. By tracking active projects, pending tasks, and recent conversational history, it ensures your AI agent always knows exactly where you left off. This Openclaw Skills integration acts as a bridge between sessions, providing a cohesive developer experience by restoring the last active file, command, and topic automatically.

Built to enhance project-based workflows, the engine allows for seamless switching between multiple development streams without losing metadata. Whether you are managing complex repositories or simple task lists, Context Engine provides the organizational infrastructure needed for high-performance AI collaboration.

Context Engine Use Cases

  • Restoring project context automatically when starting a new terminal session.
  • Switching between different feature branches or projects without losing track of pending tasks.
  • Generating quick summaries of project progress for daily stand-ups or personal tracking.
  • Archiving and listing long-term projects to maintain a clean workspace memory.

How Context Engine Works

  1. The engine triggers a restore_context action during session_start to load the most recent project state.
  2. Throughout the session, a heartbeat mechanism or explicit user commands save the current topic, files, and commands.
  3. When a user requests a project switch, the engine saves the current state to the local database and initializes the new project environment.
  4. Project data is cross-referenced with the MEMORY.md system to update long-term logs with concise summaries.
  5. Upon session termination, a final save_context call ensures all metadata is persisted to the workspace memory.

Context Engine Setup

To enable this skill within your environment, ensure the directory structure exists and the script is accessible to your agent.

# Ensure the memory directory exists
mkdir -p /home/deus/.openclaw/workspace/memory/projects/

# The context-engine is typically included in the Openclaw Skills standard library.
# Check installation status:
openclaw skills list | grep context-engine

Context Engine Data Schema & Taxonomy

Context Engine organizes data within the .openclaw/workspace/memory/ directory using the following structure:

File Purpose Data Type
projects.json Stores global project list, status, and metadata JSON Object
session.json Tracks current active session state and temporary buffers JSON Object
MEMORY.md Long-term summarized project logs for LLM retrieval Markdown

Tracked Metadata Fields:

  • last_topic: The last subject discussed in the session.
  • pending_tasks: An array of incomplete action items.
  • last_file: The path to the last edited or analyzed file.
  • status: Project state (active, paused, completed, or archived).

Context Engine Advanced Features

  • Automatic Heartbeat: Periodically saves context every 30 minutes to prevent data loss during crashes.
  • Multi-Project Management: Supports an unlimited number of projects with easy switching via natural language commands.
  • Memory Integration: Automatically syncs project summaries to MEMORY.md for RAG-based long-term recall.
  • State Restoration: Intelligent 'Welcome Back' messages that summarize where you left off and list immediate next steps.
