What is duely?

duely is a purpose-built CLI tool designed to manage recurring maintenance tasks that often clutter traditional calendars. It provides a streamlined interface for defining periodic chores—such as database backups, security reviews, or hardware maintenance—and tracking their completion status. By focusing on intervals rather than fixed calendar slots, it offers a flexible way to manage system reliability and routine operations.

As a featured utility within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, duely excels at providing visibility into overdue tasks and maintaining a detailed execution log. This ensures that critical maintenance never falls through the cracks, while providing a verifiable audit trail of when tasks were last performed and by whom.

duely Use Cases

  • Scheduling recurring database backups and system maintenance
  • Tracking periodic security audits and credential rotations
  • Managing physical hardware maintenance cycles (e.g., oil changes, filter replacements)
  • Automating maintenance checks within AI agent heartbeats
  • Maintaining a historical log of recurring DevOps operations

How duely Works

  1. Initialize a task by assigning a unique ID and a recurrence interval using the add command.
  2. Query the system using the due command to identify which tasks require immediate attention based on their last run time.
  3. Execute the maintenance task and record its completion with the run command, optionally adding execution notes.
  4. Review the chronological execution log to verify consistency and system health over time.
  5. Use the skip command to reschedule tasks during maintenance windows without marking them as completed.

duely Setup

To get started with duely, install the binary via Homebrew. This setup ensures the tool is available for both manual terminal use and Openclaw Skills automation:

brew tap halbotley/tap
brew install duely

duely Data Schema & Taxonomy

duely maintains a local data store to manage task states and history. The schema is organized as follows:

Feature Specification
Storage Location ~/.duely/
Task Identifiers Lowercase strings, no spaces (e.g., db-backup)
Intervals Supported units: h (hours), d (days), w (weeks)
Metadata Timestamps for start date, last run, and next due date
Logging Flat-file execution log containing timestamps, status, and notes

duely Advanced Features

  • Native integration with AI agent workflows for automated heartbeat monitoring
  • Support for custom start dates to align maintenance cycles with project milestones
  • Flexible scheduling intervals ranging from 12 hours to 90+ days
  • Detailed execution logs with support for specific 'skip' reasons and 'run' notes
  • Zero-overhead architecture storing data locally for maximum privacy and speed
