What is TODO Skill?

The TODO skill is a professional-grade task management system built to enhance your AI agent's productivity capabilities. It allows for the seamless creation, tracking, and organization of personal tasks directly through natural language or CLI commands. As a core component within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it ensures that your data remains persistent and accessible in a structured format while providing the intelligence to manage complex deadlines and priorities.

This skill goes beyond simple lists by incorporating a smart scheduling engine that handles recurring items, ranging from daily habits to monthly commitments. By integrating this into your workflow, you benefit from an agent that proactively manages your time, offering structured morning and evening summaries to keep you focused on your most important goals.

TODO Skill Use Cases

  • Managing high-priority daily tasks with specific deadlines.
  • Setting up complex recurring schedules like every weekday or specific days of the week.
  • Getting automated briefings to review overdue tasks and upcoming milestones.
  • Organizing personal projects using tags and detailed notes for better context.

How TODO Skill Works

  1. The skill captures user intent from natural language to extract task titles, due dates, and priority levels.
  2. Commands are processed through a Node.js-based CLI, which serves as the primary interface for data manipulation.
  3. All information is persisted in a specialized todos.md file that stores both machine-readable JSON and human-readable Markdown.
  4. A materialize function runs daily to convert recurring task templates into active, trackable items.
  5. Automated triggers execute briefing commands at specific times (08:30 and 18:00) to deliver status updates to the user.

TODO Skill Setup

To utilize this skill, ensure that Node.js is installed on your system as it is a required dependency for the Openclaw Skills execution environment. The data file is created automatically on the first run.

# The skill logic is handled by the internal CLI
node ~/.openclaw/skills/todo/cli.js list

# To manually add a task via CLI:
node ~/.openclaw/skills/todo/cli.js add "Review project proposal" --due 2023-12-01 --priority high

TODO Skill Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages its state within ~/.openclaw/skills/todo/todos.md. This file is managed by the CLI and should not be edited manually.

Component Description
Storage Format Hybrid JSON block for agents and Markdown tables for human readability.
Task Metadata Includes ID, Title, Due Date, Priority (high/medium/low), Notes, and Tags.
Recurring Schemas Supports daily, weekly, monthly-first, monthly-last, and specific day arrays (e.g., mon, wed, fri).

TODO Skill Advanced Features

  • Smart Deadline Negotiation: The agent proactively requests due dates if omitted, ensuring every task is tracked in time.
  • Automated Materialization: Converts recurring templates into actionable tasks every midnight without user intervention.
  • Contextual Urgency Mapping: Automatically translates phrases like "ASAP" to high priority and "no rush" to low priority.
