What is Equalang Translation?

Equalang Translation lets an OpenClaw agent process a local file or public URL for translation, or turn a recording into timed text. It supports common office documents, PDFs, EPUB, HTML, subtitles, images, audio, and video; documents retain layout where supported, while audio and video produce translated subtitles or transcriptions.

The skill estimates credit costs before paid work, waits for jobs, and returns output paths and charges rather than reading entire files into the conversation. Openclaw Skills users can also check job status, cancel work, inspect balances, and discover supported language codes. Processing sends files and text to Equalang’s cloud and requires an account and credits for paid operations.

Equalang Translation Use Cases

  • Translate a report, presentation, spreadsheet, ebook, or other supported document while preserving its structure where available.
  • Create translated SRT or VTT subtitles from an audio or video recording.
  • Transcribe interviews, meetings, or other recordings into timed text.
  • Translate multiple short strings or a long plain-text file in one request.
  • Estimate costs for individual files before requesting paid processing.
  • Resume checking a long-running job or cancel it if the user changes plans.

How Equalang Translation Works

  1. The user supplies a supported local file, public URL, text, or recording and specifies the target language or desired transcription.
  2. Run estimate for files to obtain the upload ID and estimated translation or transcription credits. The estimate is free and does not start processing.
  3. Tell the user the estimated cost and obtain agreement before running translate or transcribe. For multiple files, estimate each, total the costs, and ask once.
  4. Submit the job using a path, URL, or existing file ID. Equalang processes it in the cloud; the command waits and reports progress on stderr.
  5. On completion, report the output paths and credits charged. Results are written without overwriting existing files, and the generated contents are not read back unless requested.
  6. If needed, use status to retrieve a job’s outcome, cancel to stop it, balance to check credits, or languages to look up supported language codes.

Equalang Translation Setup

The skill requires Python 3. Create an Equalang API key at https://equalang.com/api-keys and store it in the local configuration file. The environment variable takes precedence over the file. Never invent a key; ask the user to provide one. A key is required for processing unless it is already available in the local Equalang configuration.

dir="${XDG_CONFIG_HOME:-$HOME/.config}/equalang"
mkdir -p "$dir" && (umask 077 && echo 'EQUALANG_API_KEY=el_...' > "$dir/.env")

Run commands from the skill directory. Each command prints one JSON object; use --help to inspect flags. For example:

python3 scripts/equalang.py estimate report.pdf
python3 scripts/equalang.py translate report.pdf --to zh-CN
python3 scripts/equalang.py transcribe interview.mp3 --format srt --format txt

EQUALANG_BASE_URL optionally overrides the default API endpoint, https://equalang.com/v1. XDG_CONFIG_HOME optionally changes the configuration root. Files and text are sent to Equalang’s cloud; an account and credits are required for paid operations. Review the privacy policy at https://equalang.com/legal/privacy.

Equalang Translation Data Schema & Taxonomy

The command-line interface emits one JSON object per command. An estimate includes a file_id and credit estimates such as credits_to_translate or credits_to_transcribe. Completed jobs report outputs entries containing output path values and a credits_charged amount. Failures return error, code, and retryable; retry only when retryable is true.

Data or artifact Organization and behavior
Credentials ~/.config/equalang/.env, or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/equalang/.env; the environment variable EQUALANG_API_KEY takes precedence.
Source files Local paths or public URLs; files may be up to 100 MB. URLs are fetched by Equalang.
Results Written beside a local source, to the directory passed with -o, or to the current directory for a URL. Equalang chooses the filename; collisions receive a (1) suffix. Results never overwrite existing files.
Supported document formats PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, EPUB, HTML, TXT.
Supported subtitles and images SRT, VTT; JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP.
Supported recordings MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, OPUS, MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV. transcribe accepts recordings only.
Text inputs Up to 50 individual strings of 5,000 characters each, with a 20,000-character per-call limit; a single long plain-text file or input can be up to 100,000 characters.
Job metadata Use the returned job ID with status or cancel. Checking a finished job reports existing output paths rather than copying the files again.

Equalang Translation Advanced Features

  • Reuse the file_id from estimate when submitting a translation to avoid uploading the same file a second time.
  • Request bilingual translated subtitles and select output formats such as SRT and TXT.
  • Omit --source-language to let the service detect the source language; query live supported codes with languages and filter by name or kind.
  • Recover from interrupted waiting by checking status <job_id>; interrupting the local command does not cancel the cloud job.
  • Cancel a running job explicitly. Cancelled or failed jobs are not charged; retry failures only when the response marks them retryable.
  • Use balance to inspect credits and account for recording estimates: charges are based on speech actually heard, so silence and music are not billed as speech.
  • For long plain text, submit the original text or file and let Equalang split at sentence boundaries rather than splitting it manually.
  • Review the API reference at https://equalang.com/llms.txt for capabilities beyond the bundled script. Openclaw Skills workflows should preserve the approval step before any paid translation or transcription.
