What is Export Conversation Skill?

The Export Conversation skill is a specialized tool designed to transform raw JSONL session data from your AI interactions into human-readable Markdown files. By targeting local session storage, this skill enables developers to maintain a clean record of their workflows without manual copy-pasting. As a core component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it focuses on data portability and documentation efficiency, ensuring that valuable AI insights are easily accessible in standard text formats.

Export Conversation Skill Use Cases

  • Archiving complex coding sessions for long-term project documentation.
  • Sharing AI-generated solutions with teammates in a readable format.
  • Converting raw session logs into structured notes or blog post drafts.
  • Exporting specific historical conversations using unique session IDs for audit purposes.

How Export Conversation Skill Works

  1. The skill identifies the target session ID, either by reading the current thread ID from the environment or via a user-provided argument.
  2. It accesses the local session directory located at ~/.codex/sessions to find the corresponding JSONL file.
  3. The script parses the structured JSON data into a chronological Markdown transcript.
  4. It verifies the existence of the ~/Documents/Exports directory, creating it if it does not already exist.
  5. The final Markdown file is written to the export folder, and the system prints the full file path for the user.

Export Conversation Skill Setup

To integrate this capability into your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure you have the necessary python script in your local directory. You can execute the export directly from your terminal:

scripts/export_conversation.py

For exporting a specific session, provide the session ID as an argument:

scripts/export_conversation.py [session-id]
