What is Fabric API Skill?

The Fabric API skill allows your AI agent to interact directly with the Fabric platform's backend. It bypasses complex UI interactions by using lightweight Node and Python scripts to perform RESTful operations. This skill is essential for users who want to automate their personal knowledge management (PKM) workflow, enabling an agent to capture ideas, organize folders, and search through bookmarks programmatically.

By leveraging the Openclaw Skills framework, this tool provides a standardized way to handle authentication and resource management within the Fabric ecosystem. It provides helper scripts that ensure consistent behavior across different operating systems, making it a robust choice for developers building AI-driven automation for the Fabric workspace.

Fabric API Skill Use Cases

  • Automatically saving meeting notes or summaries directly to a Fabric notepad.
  • Organizing research by creating folders and adding bookmarks via AI commands.
  • Searching through existing Fabric resources using fuzzy text queries to find specific information.
  • Batch tagging resources for better discoverability within the Fabric workspace.
  • Moving or sorting content between the inbox and specific project folders.

How Fabric API Skill Works

  1. The AI agent identifies a request to interact with Fabric and prepares a JSON payload containing resource details.
  2. The agent invokes either the Node (fabric.mjs) or Python (fabric.py) helper script provided by this skill.
  3. The helper script automatically attaches the required X-Api-Key header using the FABRIC_API_KEY from the environment.
  4. An HTTP request is dispatched to the Fabric API base URL (https://api.fabric.so).
  5. The helper script captures the API response, handling potential HTTP errors (4xx/5xx) while outputting the response body for the agent to process.
  6. The agent confirms the operation's success to the user or retries based on the error code received.

Fabric API Skill Setup

To use this skill with Openclaw Skills, you must provide your Fabric API key. Set the environment variable in your shell:

export FABRIC_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"

Alternatively, add it to your Openclaw configuration file at ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json:

{
  "skills": {
    "entries": {
      "fabric-api": {
        "enabled": true,
        "apiKey": "YOUR_FABRIC_API_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

Fabric API Skill Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes and interacts with data using the following taxonomy:

Resource Key Fields Description
Notepad name, text, parentId Represents a note. Use text for Markdown content.
Folder name, parentId Container for other resources.
Bookmark url, name, parentId Saved web links with optional metadata.
Tag name or id Must be passed as an array of objects: [{"name": "tag"}].
Parent ID UUID or Alias Default aliases include @alias::inbox and @alias::bin.

Note: The API uses the field name for what is commonly referred to as a "title".

Fabric API Skill Advanced Features

  • Multi-language support with dedicated helpers for both Node.js and Python.
  • Support for specialized API aliases to simplify resource placement without needing UUIDs.
  • Advanced search filtering allowing agents to narrow results by resource kind (e.g., only searching notepads).
  • Detailed error reporting that distinguishes between schema validation issues and transient server errors.
  • Capability to handle complex tag structures for sophisticated information architecture.
