What is Filament Vault?

Filament Vault is a specialized utility designed for makers and 3D printing enthusiasts to maintain a precise digital ledger of their physical materials. As part of the growing ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, it provides a robust local-first solution for tracking filament consumption without relying on cloud services. It allows users to log specific details for every spool, including brand, material type, and cost, ensuring you never run out of material mid-print.

By leveraging simple Python scripts, this skill transforms how you interact with your workspace. It centralizes inventory data into a portable JSON format, making it easy to integrate with other automation tools or simply keep your workshop organized and cost-efficient.

Filament Vault Use Cases

  • Tracking filament consumption across multiple 3D printers and projects.
  • Monitoring low-stock levels to prevent failed prints due to empty spools.
  • Auditing 3D printing expenses and material costs for small business or hobbyist budgets.
  • Managing material storage locations to quickly find specific colors or types (PLA, PETG, ABS, etc.).

How Filament Vault Works

  1. The user registers a new spool using the add_spool script, defining its initial weight and cost attributes.
  2. When a print is completed, the user runs the update_spool script to subtract the grams consumed from the inventory.
  3. The skill stores all state changes in a local JSON file located within the Openclaw workspace directory.
  4. Real-time queries can be performed to filter by material or color to see what is currently available on the shelf.
  5. The reporting engine aggregates the stored data to provide a high-level overview of material value and stock alerts.

Filament Vault Setup

To get started with this entry in your Openclaw Skills collection, ensure you have Python 3 installed. Use the following commands to manage your vault:

# Add a new 1kg spool of PLA
python3 scripts/add_spool.py --brand "Bambu" --material PLA --color "Matte Black" --weight 1000 --cost 19.99

# Check your current stock
python3 scripts/inventory.py --low-stock

Filament Vault Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages data within a structured JSON environment. All records are saved to ~/.openclaw/workspace/filament-vault/inventory.json.

Field Type Description
id UUID Unique identifier for each spool
brand String Manufacturer name (e.g., Bambu, Prusa)
material String Type of plastic (PLA, PETG, TPU, etc.)
current_weight Integer Remaining filament in grams
cost Float Purchase price in USD
location String Physical storage spot (e.g., Shelf A)

Filament Vault Advanced Features

  • Fuzzy Search: Quickly locate materials using partial matches across brand, color, or notes fields.
  • Automated Reporting: Generate comprehensive breakdown reports including by-material statistics and monthly spending totals.
  • Low-Stock Thresholds: Customize alerts to trigger when a spool drops below a specific weight (default 100g).
  • JSON Export: Output inventory lists in raw JSON format for integration with external dashboards or custom scripts.
