What is Foundry?

Foundry is a sophisticated development agent designed to act as a forge for the Openclaw ecosystem. By analyzing documentation and learning from previous interactions, it builds new Openclaw Skills, extensions, and browser automation tools on the fly. This meta-extension allows developers to focus on high-level goals while the agent handles the technical implementation of the tools it needs to succeed.

It operates as a layer of intelligence that understands the underlying protocols of your environment. Instead of requiring manual coding for every new integration, Foundry can research the necessary APIs, write the implementation, and self-modify to incorporate the new functionality into its permanent toolkit.

Foundry Use Cases

  • Rapidly prototyping new extensions and tools for specific development tasks.
  • Automating the research of complex API documentation before implementation.
  • Improving agent performance by learning from success and failure patterns.
  • Generating and publishing high-value patterns to the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills.

How Foundry Works

  1. The user requests a new capability, tool, or extension via natural language.
  2. Foundry performs targeted research using foundry_research across documentation, arXiv, and GitHub repositories.
  3. The system generates the required code for new Openclaw Skills using specialized writing tools like foundry_write_extension or foundry_write_skill.
  4. All generated code undergoes security validation and sandboxed testing to ensure safety before deployment.
  5. Foundry observes its own tool calls and successes, recording patterns that are eventually crystallized into permanent capabilities.

Foundry Setup

To install Foundry, run the following command in your terminal:

openclaw plugins install @getfoundry/foundry-openclaw

Alternatively, you can manually enable the plugin by editing your ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json configuration file:

{
  "plugins": {
    "entries": {
      "foundry": { "enabled": true }
    }
  }
}

Foundry Data Schema & Taxonomy

Foundry organizes its artifacts and settings within the Openclaw configuration directory to maintain a clean workspace for all Openclaw Skills:

Component Path / Detail
Core Extension ~/.openclaw/extensions/foundry/
Written Artifacts ~/.openclaw/extensions/
Configuration ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json
Pattern Memory Accessible via the foundry_learnings tool

The configuration schema includes toggles for autoLearn, which allows the agent to record activity patterns, and sources to define which external documentation databases are indexed.

Foundry Advanced Features

  • Self-Modification: Use foundry_extend_self to add new internal tools to Foundry without manual intervention.
  • Pattern Crystallization: Automatically transforms high-value resolution patterns into permanent code-based capabilities.
  • Multi-Source Learning: Synthesizes information from Openclaw documentation, academic papers (arXiv), and real-world GitHub repositories.
  • Marketplace Integration: Browse, install, and publish community-driven Openclaw Skills to expand the power of your local agent.
