What is Fountain?

Fountain is an Openclaw Skills integration designed for professional screenwriters and filmmakers who utilize the Fountain plain-text format for scriptwriting. It allows AI agents to interact directly with screenplay documents, sections, projects, and templates without the overhead of manual formatting. By leveraging this skill, developers can build agents that focus on story structure and script analysis rather than technical plumbing.

The integration is powered by Membrane, which provides a secure layer for authentication and data management. This ensures that your Openclaw Skills can access Fountain data reliably, handling credential refreshes and API complexity in the background so you can focus on building intelligent screenplay automations.

Fountain Use Cases

  • Automating the creation and updates of screenplay sections and projects.
  • Extracting script analysis data or metadata from Fountain documents for production planning.
  • Managing user permissions and collaboration roles within a screenwriting team.
  • Synchronizing screenplay templates across multiple film production workflows.
  • Integrating Fountain data with other production tools via automated AI agent triggers.

How Fountain Works

  1. The AI agent initializes the environment by installing and logging into the Membrane CLI to establish a secure session.
  2. A connection is established to the Fountain domain, where Membrane handles the OAuth or API key handshake.
  3. The agent polls the connection status until it reaches a READY state, ensuring all credentials are valid.
  4. The agent uses natural language intent to search for specific Fountain actions like document retrieval or project updates.
  5. Commands are executed through the Membrane proxy, which automatically injects authentication headers and handles API communication.
  6. For complex or custom requirements, the agent sends direct proxy requests to Fountain endpoints while maintaining secure credential management.

Fountain Setup

First, install the Membrane CLI to enable Openclaw Skills to communicate with the Fountain API:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your agent by specifying the client name:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Ensure a connection to the Fountain service:

membrane connection ensure "https://fountain.io/" --json

If the connection is building, wait for it to be ready:

membrane connection get <id> --wait --json

Fountain Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Fountain skill organizes data into a hierarchical structure that mirrors professional screenplay components. Below is the primary metadata taxonomy used by Openclaw Skills:

Entity Description
Document The primary screenplay file containing the Fountain-formatted text.
Section Specific parts of a script (e.g., acts or sequences) defined within the document.
Project A high-level container for multiple scripts, assets, and metadata.
User Identity data for collaborators and writers.
Template Pre-defined script structures for different screenplay types.

Fountain Advanced Features

  • Natural Language Intent Discovery: Use the action list with an intent string to find the most relevant tool for your screenwriting task.
  • Automated Credential Refresh: Transparently handles token expiration without user intervention or local secret storage.
  • Direct API Proxying: Allows agents to perform any Fountain API operation not covered by pre-built actions using the membrane request command.
  • Long-polling Wait Support: Built-in mechanism to wait for asynchronous connection processes to complete before executing script operations.
  • Machine-Readable JSON Output: All CLI commands support a --json flag, making it easy for agents to parse and act on Fountain data programmatically.
