What is gen-design?

The gen-design skill is a core component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, specifically engineered to transform product requirements into technical blueprints. It uses an interactive process to help developers select the optimal tech stack based on project scale, including frontend frameworks like Vue 3 and backend solutions like Spring Boot 3.

By leveraging localized domain knowledge libraries, gen-design ensures that data models and integration points are consistent with industry standards for sectors like e-commerce, payments, and user management. This skill bridges the gap between the initial PRD and actual code generation by providing a validated technical foundation.

gen-design Use Cases

  • Creating standardized system design documents for new features or entire microservices.
  • Designing domain-driven data models and ER diagrams based on existing knowledge bases.
  • Planning complex system integrations including API contracts and message queue logic.
  • Selecting and documenting project-specific technology stacks and deployment architectures.

How gen-design Works

  1. The user triggers the workflow via /gen-design after a PRD is available in the workspace.
  2. The agent identifies the business domain and loads relevant domain knowledge from the Openclaw Skills library.
  3. An interactive session begins where the user confirms tech stack preferences, expected user scale, and deployment environments.
  4. The agent generates a comprehensive architecture proposal including frontend, backend, database, and optional AI capabilities.
  5. Upon confirmation, the agent produces detailed data models, interface designs, and integration contracts aligned with the PRD.
  6. A complete Markdown document is saved to the local directory, which can then be validated for data flow consistency.

gen-design Setup

To utilize gen-design within your environment, ensure your project structure includes a docs directory for output storage. This skill is part of the broader Openclaw Skills framework.

# Create the required design directory
mkdir -p docs/design

# Ensure your domain knowledge libraries are populated in:
# skills/libs/domain-knowledge/

# Execute the design command
/gen-design

gen-design Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill generates structured design files within the docs/design/ directory. The schema for these documents follows a rigorous taxonomy:

Component Format Description
System Architecture Mermaid Diagram High-level component and container views.
Technology Stack List Detailed versions for Frontend, Backend, and DB.
Data Model Tables & ERD Entity relationships, field types, and indexing strategies.
API Design Markdown Table Endpoint paths, methods, and request/response structures.
Integration Contract List Upstream and downstream integration point definitions.

gen-design Advanced Features

  • Architecture Decision Trees: Automatically recommends Monolith vs Microservices based on projected daily active users.
  • Domain-Driven Design (DDD) Integration: Loads specific entity relationships from localized Openclaw Skills knowledge bases.
  • AI-Native Support: Built-in templates for integrating LangChain4j and LangGraph4j into modern application stacks.
  • Automated Data Flow Alignment: Cross-references design integration points with PRD data loops to prevent architectural drift.
