What is gifgrep?

gifgrep is a specialized command-line utility designed to bridge the gap between high-speed terminal workflows and visual GIF media. It allows developers and power users to query major providers like Tenor and Giphy directly from the console. By providing both a fast search interface and a rich Terminal User Interface (TUI), gifgrep makes it effortless to integrate visual media into documentation, pull requests, or communications.

As a versatile component within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, it provides a programmatic way to interact with dynamic image assets without leaving the development environment. Whether you need a quick reaction GIF for a team chat or a technical breakdown of an animation for a bug report, this tool streamlines the entire lifecycle from search to extraction.

gifgrep Use Cases

  • Rapidly searching for GIFs to include in Pull Requests or developer documentation.
  • Automating the download of GIF assets for marketing or design projects.
  • Generating frame-by-frame contact sheets (sheets) for quick visual review of animations.
  • Extracting specific still frames from a GIF at precise timestamps for use as thumbnails.

How gifgrep Works

  1. The user initiates a search via the CLI or enters the interactive TUI mode using specific query parameters.
  2. gifgrep queries configured providers such as Tenor or Giphy using provided API keys or default demo keys.
  3. Results are displayed as a list, JSON object, or interactive grid with still-frame previews for supported terminals.
  4. Users can download selected GIFs directly to the local file system or pipe specific fields like URLs to other automation commands.
  5. Post-processing commands can be executed to generate still images or complex grid sheets from the downloaded GIF files.

gifgrep Setup

To install gifgrep via Homebrew on macOS or Linux, which is often the preferred method for users of Openclaw Skills:

brew tap steipete/tap
brew install gifgrep

Alternatively, you can install the tool using Go:

go install github.com/steipete/gifgrep/cmd/gifgrep@latest

To use Giphy as a provider, ensure you set your API key in your environment:

export GIPHY_API_KEY='your_key_here'

gifgrep Data Schema & Taxonomy

The tool provides structured output that is highly compatible with other Openclaw Skills. When using the --json flag, the data follows this schema:

Field Type Description
id String Unique identifier from the GIF provider
title String The descriptive title of the GIF
url String The direct web link to the source GIF
preview_url String Link to the static preview thumbnail
tags Array List of metadata tags associated with the asset
width / height Integer Dimensional metadata for the image

gifgrep Advanced Features

  • TUI Mode: An interactive terminal browser featuring keyboard navigation for effortless media discovery.
  • Contact Sheets: Generate a single PNG grid of sampled frames using the sheet command with custom frames and columns.
  • Precision Stills: Extract a frame at a specific timestamp (e.g., --at 1.5s) to capture the perfect moment from an animation.
  • Terminal Previews: High-fidelity still previews available natively for Kitty and Ghostty terminal users via the --thumbs flag.
  • Format Filtering: Pipe-friendly output options that allow you to extract specific fields like raw URLs for use in shell scripts.
