What is GitBuddy?

GitBuddy is a comprehensive command-line utility designed for developers who need to maintain a high-fidelity audit trail of their technical activities. It serves as a local-first repository for logging checks, linting results, diffs, and fixes without ever requiring an internet connection. By integrating GitBuddy into your Openclaw Skills library, you gain the ability to transform ephemeral CLI outputs into a structured, searchable knowledge base.

Built as a pure shell script with no external dependencies, GitBuddy prioritizes speed and privacy. It functions as both a logger and a viewer, allowing teams and solo developers to track code quality trends, document architectural decisions, and generate detailed development reports directly from the terminal.

GitBuddy Use Cases

  • Monitoring code quality trends and linting violations across different branches and releases.
  • Maintaining a searchable audit trail of bug fixes and configuration changes for compliance or post-mortems.
  • Generating automated activity reports for sprint retrospectives and team updates.
  • Creating a local knowledge base of code explanations and architecture decisions to assist with onboarding.
  • Tracking the outcome of dependency audits and pre-commit verification results.

How GitBuddy Works

  1. The user executes a domain command (e.g., check, lint, fix) followed by an input string to record a timestamped entry.
  2. GitBuddy persists the data locally in specific log files mapped to that domain, while simultaneously updating a unified history log.
  3. Running any domain command without arguments triggers the viewer mode, displaying the most recent 20 entries for that specific category.
  4. Users can leverage utility commands like stats or search to analyze data across all logged domains.
  5. The export command allows for the transformation of local log files into JSON, CSV, or TXT formats for external reporting.

GitBuddy Setup

GitBuddy is designed for rapid deployment on any system with Bash 4.0 or higher. Follow these steps to integrate it with your Openclaw Skills:

# Ensure you have Bash 4.0+ installed
bash --version

# Clone or download the gitbuddy script to your local path
chmod +x gitbuddy
sudo mv gitbuddy /usr/local/bin/

# Verify the installation and initialize the data directory
gitbuddy status

GitBuddy Data Schema & Taxonomy

GitBuddy organizes data within the ~/.local/share/gitbuddy/ directory. Each domain utilizes a dedicated log file to ensure high performance and clean categorization.

File Purpose
check.log Records code quality and dependency audit results.
lint.log Stores error counts, warnings, and rule violations.
fix.log Tracks bug fixes and resolution details.
history.log A unified chronological record of every action taken across all commands.
stats Metadata regarding entry counts and total disk usage.

GitBuddy Advanced Features

  • Offline-first architecture ensures your development data never leaves your machine.
  • Dual-mode command execution allows for seamless switching between logging data and viewing historical records.
  • Unified activity tracking via history.log for a holistic view of developer productivity.
  • Multi-format data portability supporting JSON and CSV for integration with external analytics tools.
  • Case-insensitive global search across all log categories for rapid knowledge retrieval.
