What is Skill Analytics?

Skill Analytics provides a comprehensive observability layer for your AI agent ecosystem. By logging every skill invocation across different sessions and platforms, it turns your skill library into a data-driven feedback loop. This ensures you have visibility into which features are driving value and which are underutilized.

Using this within the context of Openclaw Skills allows developers to maintain a high-performance automation suite by identifying bottlenecks and frequency of use. It is essential for teams looking to scale their AI operations with clear metrics and historical logs, providing a transparent view of agent behavior without external dependencies.

Skill Analytics Use Cases

  • Monitoring daily agent activity to ensure automation consistency.
  • Identifying unused Openclaw Skills to prune or improve the agent library.
  • Analyzing triggers to understand how users or system processes are interacting with skills.
  • Generating automated morning briefings of system health and activity context.

How Skill Analytics Works

  1. Every time an agent invokes a skill, a log entry is appended to a local JSONL file containing metadata like timestamp, skill name, and trigger.
  2. The script processes these logs using CLI tools to aggregate performance data over the last 24 hours.
  3. A summary report is generated, highlighting top-performing skills, all-time usage, and distribution across contexts (DM, group, or cron).
  4. Users can set up automated cron jobs to receive these reports at scheduled intervals.

Skill Analytics Setup

First, ensure the data directory exists and initialize the log file:

mkdir -p /opt/ocana/openclaw/workspace/data
touch /opt/ocana/openclaw/workspace/data/skill-analytics.jsonl

Integrate logging into your Openclaw Skills by adding this snippet to the top of your execution logic:

echo "{\"ts\":\"$(date -u +%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%SZ)\",\"skill\":\"SKILL_NAME\",\"trigger\":\"TRIGGER\",\"context\":\"CONTEXT\"}" >> /opt/ocana/openclaw/workspace/data/skill-analytics.jsonl

Optional: Add a crontab entry to automate the daily summary report:

25 5 * * * /opt/ocana/openclaw/workspace/scripts/skill-report.sh

Skill Analytics Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill maintains a flat JSONL (JSON Lines) file located at /opt/ocana/openclaw/workspace/data/skill-analytics.jsonl. Each entry follows this structure:

Field Type Description
ts String ISO 8601 UTC timestamp
skill String The unique identifier of the invoked skill
trigger String The phrase or command that initiated the skill
context String The environment (e.g., dm, group:name, or cron)

Skill Analytics Advanced Features

  • Automated unused skill detection by comparing logs against a master inventory of Openclaw Skills.
  • Historical archiving and rotation to manage log file size on a monthly basis.
  • Context-aware reporting to distinguish between manual user interactions and automated system tasks.
  • Integration with morning briefings for proactive agent management and system health monitoring.
