What is Human-Type?

Human-Type is a specialized utility designed to bridge the gap between robotic automation and authentic human interaction. By generating keystroke scripts that include adjacent-key typos, thinking pauses, and speed jitter, it allows developers to interact with web elements in a way that is indistinguishable from a real user. This is particularly valuable for testing anti-bot measures, creating realistic demo recordings, or automating form entries that require a natural touch.

The skill goes beyond simple character entry by incorporating complex behavioral patterns like French accent omissions (typing 'e' instead of 'é' and fixing it later) and deferred corrections, where errors are addressed only after a paragraph is completed. Integrated deeply with the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it leverages the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) to ensure precise execution within the browser.

Human-Type Use Cases

  • Bypassing basic bot detection by simulating natural typing rhythms and error patterns.
  • Creating high-quality, realistic screen recordings for product demos without manual typing.
  • Stress testing form validation logic against common human errors and late-stage corrections.
  • Automating localized content entry with specific language behaviors like French accent handling.
  • Ensuring reproducible typing sequences for regression testing using seeded RNG.

How Human-Type Works

  1. The user defines the target text and desired duration for the typing sequence.
  2. Human-Type generates a JSON-based event script containing keystrokes, pauses, and simulated errors.
  3. The skill connects to a running browser instance via the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP).
  4. If a CSS selector is provided, the tool automatically focuses the target element.
  5. The event script is played back, executing deletes, replacements, and navigation arrows to achieve the final text.
  6. The process concludes once the exact target string is perfectly rendered in the browser field.

Human-Type Setup

Verify your local environment or perform an optional global installation to start using this part of the Openclaw Skills library:

# Check local installation
node "human-type.js" --version

# Optional global installation
npm install -g human-type-cli

Human-Type Data Schema & Taxonomy

Human-Type organizes its simulation data into a structured JSON event format, allowing for inspection and replay. Each event includes the following properties:

Property Description
type The action performed: type, delete, pause, arrow, select-back, or select-replace.
ch The specific character being typed or replaced.
time The millisecond offset from the start of the sequence.
duration The time gap in milliseconds before the next event occurs.
dir / n Direction and count for arrow-based navigation and selection.

Human-Type Advanced Features

  • Seeded Reproducibility: Use the --seed flag to generate identical keystroke sequences every time for consistent testing.
  • French Accent Omission Mode: Simulate the common habit of typing base characters and adding accents during a secondary correction pass.
  • Script Persistence: Generate and save complex typing scripts to JSON files for later replay using the generate and play commands.
  • Interactive Inspection: Use the inspect command to view detailed statistics and timing data of a generated typing script.
  • CDP Integration: Direct connection to Openclaw Skills browser profiles via standard port mappings (default 18800).
