What is Agent Communication?

The Agent Communication skill is a foundational protocol designed for Openclaw Skills to facilitate seamless and secure interaction between multiple AI agents. It effectively bypasses the limitations and security risks of reusing human-agent conversation sessions by utilizing dedicated subagent runtimes.

By establishing persistent communication channels through a structured lifecycle, this skill ensures that complex multi-agent tasks are coordinated efficiently. It provides a standardized way for agents to discover existing channels or spawn new ones, ensuring that the Openclaw Skills ecosystem remains organized and scalable for sophisticated multi-agent workflows.

Agent Communication Use Cases

  • Orchestrating complex workflows across different specialized AI agents within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.
  • Establishing long-term, persistent task-specific channels between primary and secondary agents.
  • Offloading sub-tasks to specialized agents while maintaining a clear audit trail and session isolation.
  • Implementing bidirectional communication where agents can request and provide updates without human intervention.

How Agent Communication Works

  1. Search for existing sessions using a list function to find active subagent markers.
  2. Perform a bidirectional check to see if a channel (e.g., sender-to-receiver or receiver-to-sender) already exists to avoid redundant session creation.
  3. Create a new subagent session if no previous channel is found, using the specific sender-to-receiver label format.
  4. Execute a session protection command to ensure the new communication channel is not removed by automatic cleanup processes.
  5. Dispatch the task description or message through the validated subagent session key.

Agent Communication Setup

To integrate Agent Communication into your Openclaw Skills, ensure your environment supports subagent spawning. After creating a session, use the following command structure to protect it:

openclaw sessions cleanup --agent [target-agent] --active-key "agent:xxx:subagent:xxx" --enforce

No additional third-party configuration is required as this skill utilizes internal Openclaw Skills session management protocols.

Agent Communication Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages communication using a strict metadata taxonomy to ensure session isolation.

Attribute Description Format/Example
Session Label Identifier for the agent-to-agent pair sender-to-receiver
Runtime The designated execution environment subagent
Session Key The unique address for message delivery agent:name:subagent:uuid
Mode Operational state of the session run

Agent Communication Advanced Features

  • Bidirectional Channel Reuse: Intelligence to detect and utilize established links regardless of which agent was the original initiator.
  • Session Protection Mechanism: Advanced integration with Openclaw Skills cleanup tools to enforce session persistence for long-running tasks.
  • Specialized Subagent Markers: Uses distinct session key formatting to prevent accidental usage of forbidden human DM or group chat sessions.
  • Direct Response Logic: Optimized routing that ensures replies are sent back to the initiator by default, reducing unnecessary message propagation.
