What is Jira Skills?

Jira Skills provides a single Python command-line interface to the Jira REST API, allowing an AI coding agent to work with Jira issues without leaving the terminal. Use it to retrieve tickets, run JQL searches, create bugs or tasks, add comments, assign users, and move issues through their workflows.

The skill supports Jira Cloud and Jira Server or Data Center 7.0+, and returns command results as JSON on stdout. Openclaw Skills users can integrate Jira issue management into their development workflow while keeping credentials in environment variables or a local configuration file—not in command-line arguments.

Jira Skills Use Cases

  • Retrieve an issue to check its current status, details, or other available fields.
  • Search Jira with JQL, such as finding assigned, unresolved defects or filtering by project and status.
  • Create a bug or task with a project, issue type, summary, and description.
  • Add a comment to an issue or assign it to a user.
  • Check the available workflow transitions and move an issue to a valid target status.
  • Automate Jira tasks from an AI agent while retaining confirmation for issue-changing operations.

How Jira Skills Works

  1. Configure the Jira URL and authentication details using environment variables or ~/.devops-skills/jira.json.
  2. Run scripts/jira_cli.py with the relevant subcommand, such as get-issue, search, create-issue, comment, assign, or list-transitions.
  3. The CLI connects to Jira through its REST API. Before executing commands, it checks /rest/api/2/serverInfo for Jira version compatibility.
  4. For a workflow update, first run list-transitions to retrieve valid transition targets, then pass a valid target to transition.
  5. Read the JSON result from stdout. If a command fails, the CLI exits with a non-zero status.
  6. Confirm the issue key and target values with the user before executing write operations such as creating, commenting, assigning, or transitioning an issue.

Jira Skills Setup

  1. Set the Jira connection details in your environment or configure ~/.devops-skills/jira.json. Do not put tokens directly in command-line arguments.
export JIRA_URL="https://your-domain.atlassian.net"
export JIRA_USER="[email protected]"
export JIRA_TOKEN="<api-token-or-PAT>"
export JIRA_AUTH="basic"

For Jira Cloud, use an email address and API token with JIRA_AUTH=basic. For Jira Server or Data Center, use a Personal Access Token with JIRA_AUTH=bearer; the username may be omitted.

  1. Run the CLI with a Python environment that has the requests dependency installed. The skill recommends using the managed Python interpreter by absolute path when available:
PY=~/.workbuddy/binaries/python/envs/default/bin/python
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py get-issue PROJ-123

If requests is missing, install it in that same interpreter:

$PY -m pip install requests -i https://mirrors.aliyun.com/pypi/simple/
  1. Example commands:
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py search "project = PROJ AND status = 'In Progress'" --limit 20
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py create-issue --project PROJ --type Bug --summary "Login fails" --description "Steps..."
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py comment PROJ-123 --body "Looking into this"
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py list-transitions PROJ-123
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py transition PROJ-123 --to "Done"
$PY scripts/jira_cli.py assign PROJ-123 --user jdoe

Jira Skills Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill acts on Jira's issue and workflow data through the REST API; it does not describe a separate local issue database or generated data files.

Data or metadata Where it comes from or is used
Connection settings Environment variables such as JIRA_URL, JIRA_USER, JIRA_TOKEN, and JIRA_AUTH, or ~/.devops-skills/jira.json
Issue identifier Jira issue key, such as PROJ-123, supplied to commands that operate on an existing issue
Search criteria JQL string passed to search, with an optional result limit
Issue creation fields Project, issue type, summary, and description supplied to create-issue
Workflow metadata Available transitions returned by list-transitions; use a valid target with transition
Assignment metadata User supplied to assign --user; Server commonly uses a username, while Cloud may require an account ID
Command output JSON written to stdout; failures are indicated with a non-zero exit code

The skill does not define a custom taxonomy beyond Jira's own projects, issue types, statuses, and user identifiers.

Jira Skills Advanced Features

  • Supports Jira Cloud and Jira Server or Data Center 7.0 and later.
  • Selects authentication behavior for Cloud basic authentication or Server/Data Center bearer-token authentication.
  • Checks Jira server version before command execution; set JIRA_SKIP_VERSION_CHECK=1 or DEVOPS_SKILLS_SKIP_VERSION_CHECK=1 to bypass the check when necessary.
  • Exposes issue operations as CLI subcommands and emits JSON output for downstream tools or agent workflows.
  • Supports JQL searches with a configurable result limit.
  • Provides a two-step workflow transition pattern: inspect valid transitions first, then apply the selected target.
  • Treats issue creation, comments, assignments, and transitions as write operations that require user confirmation before execution.
