What is gog?

gog is a comprehensive CLI tool designed to facilitate seamless interaction with the Google Workspace ecosystem. It empowers developers and AI agents to perform complex operations across Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and more without a graphical interface. By leveraging gog within Openclaw Skills, users can bridge the gap between their local development environment and Google's cloud-based productivity tools, enabling sophisticated automation and data synchronization workflows.

gog Use Cases

  • Automating email workflows, such as searching for specific threads or sending programmatic notifications.
  • Synchronizing local data or application logs directly into Google Sheets for real-time reporting.
  • Managing and retrieving files from Google Drive during automated build or research processes.
  • Programmatically checking or updating calendar events for scheduling assistants.
  • Exporting Google Docs content to plain text for LLM processing or local indexing.

How gog Works

  1. The user authenticates the CLI using a Google Cloud OAuth client secret file to establish a secure connection.
  2. Specific Google services (Gmail, Sheets, etc.) are authorized for the user's account.
  3. The skill executes targeted commands to query or modify data within the specified Google Workspace service.
  4. Resulting data is typically returned in JSON format, allowing Openclaw Skills to parse and act upon the information programmatically.
  5. Environment variables like GOG_ACCOUNT are used to manage multiple accounts and streamline command execution in headless environments.

gog Setup

Install the gog CLI via Homebrew:

brew tap steipete/tap
brew install gogcli

Configure your OAuth credentials and authorize your account:

gog auth credentials /path/to/client_secret.json
gog auth add [email protected] --services gmail, calendar, drive, contacts, sheets, docs
gog auth list

To simplify usage, set your default account as an environment variable:

export [email protected]

gog Data Schema & Taxonomy

The gog skill interacts with diverse data structures across Google Workspace. When using the --json flag, data is organized as follows:

Service Primary Data Objects Metadata Tracked
Gmail Messages, Threads IDs, Labels, Date, Subject, Sender
Sheets Rows, Columns, Cells Sheet IDs, Tab Names, Metadata
Drive Files, Folders File IDs, MIME Types, Search Queries
Calendar Events Start/End ISO strings, Event IDs
Docs Document Content Export formats (txt, etc.), Document IDs

gog Advanced Features

  • Native JSON output support for all major commands to facilitate integration with automated pipelines and Openclaw Skills.
  • Advanced Sheets manipulation including cell range clearing and appending with USER_ENTERED value parsing.
  • Headless scripting support using the --no-input flag to bypass interactive prompts.
  • Flexible Google Docs processing with cat and export functions for rapid content extraction.
  • Fine-grained service scoping, allowing users to restrict access to only the necessary Workspace APIs.
