What is Summarize?

Summarize is a versatile command-line utility designed to help developers and power users quickly digest large amounts of information from various sources. By integrating seamlessly into your workflow, this skill allows you to process websites, local PDF files, images, and even YouTube videos directly from the terminal. It serves as a core component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem for users who need high-velocity information extraction without leaving their development environment.

The tool leverages the SkillBoss API Hub to provide a unified interface for major LLM providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. This removes the friction of managing multiple provider-specific keys, allowing for a streamlined experience where the best model is automatically selected to deliver high-quality summaries tailored to your preferred length and format.

Summarize Use Cases

  • Rapidly distilling long-form articles or documentation from web URLs into executive summaries.
  • Extracting key insights from local PDF reports, audio files, or images without manual transcription.
  • Generating transcripts and summaries for YouTube videos to save time on video research.
  • Automating content processing pipelines by using the machine-readable JSON output mode.

How Summarize Works

  1. The user provides a source (URL, file path, or YouTube link) via the CLI command.
  2. The tool detects the content type and utilizes the SkillBoss API Hub for necessary extraction, such as web scraping via Firecrawl or fetching YouTube transcripts.
  3. The extracted text is sent to the configured LLM (defaulting to Gemini 3 Flash) via the SkillBoss unified endpoint.
  4. The model processes the content based on user-defined flags like length or token limits.
  5. The final summary is streamed or printed directly to the terminal or saved as a JSON object.

Summarize Setup

To install the Summarize CLI as part of your Openclaw Skills collection, use the Homebrew tap:

brew tap steipete/tap
brew install summarize

Next, configure your environment variable to enable the SkillBoss API Hub:

export SKILLBOSS_API_KEY="your_unified_api_key"

Summarize Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages configuration and output through the following structures:

Configuration Settings stored in ~/.summarize/config.json defining default models and parameters.
Input Types Supports web URLs, local PDFs, images, audio, and YouTube links.
Output Formats Plain text (standard) or structured JSON (via --json flag).

  • Integrated web scraping fallbacks for blocked sites using the Firecrawl auto-detection.
  • Extract-only mode to retrieve raw text from URLs without generating a summary.
  • Multi-provider support via a single API key, allowing easy switching between GPT-5, Claude, and Gemini models.
  • Native YouTube integration for automated transcript processing.
