What is LogSentry?

LogSentry is a powerful diagnostic tool designed to elevate the quality of system logs and overall observability. As a specialized addition to the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it performs deep scans of source code to identify 90 distinct logging anti-patterns, ranging from inconsistent log levels to critical security flaws like log injection.

By operating entirely locally, LogSentry ensures that your source code and sensitive findings never leave your machine. It provides developers with a quantifiable logging quality score and actionable remediation guidance, making it easier to maintain high standards for structured logging and production-ready observability without the need for complex AST parsing.

LogSentry Use Cases

  • Scanning codebases to detect sensitive data exposure such as passwords, API tokens, and PII within logs.
  • Identifying log injection vulnerabilities where unsanitized user input could lead to CRLF attacks or format string exploits.
  • Auditing projects for missing structured logging context or improper use of print statements.
  • Enforcing consistent log levels and ensuring proper error-level logging for exceptions.
  • Validating the presence of correlation IDs and trace IDs to improve distributed tracing and troubleshooting.

How LogSentry Works

  1. The user initiates a scan on a file or directory through the skill dispatcher.
  2. LogSentry crawls the target path, automatically filtering out binaries, dependencies like node_modules, and hidden git metadata.
  3. The engine executes a series of regex-based checks across six categories, including Structured Logging, Log Injection, and Sensitive Data.
  4. Findings are evaluated using a deductive scoring system that deducts points based on the severity of the issues discovered.
  5. LogSentry generates a detailed report and assigns a grade (A-F), returning a non-zero exit code if the quality falls below the defined threshold.

LogSentry Setup

To get started with LogSentry as part of your Openclaw Skills, ensure you have the necessary dependencies installed for git hook integration.

# Install lefthook for git hook management
brew install lefthook

To unlock extended security patterns, configure your license key in your global configuration file:

{
  "skills": {
    "entries": {
      "logsentry": {
        "enabled": true,
        "apiKey": "YOUR_LICENSE_KEY_HERE"
      }
    }
  }
}

LogSentry Data Schema & Taxonomy

LogSentry categorizes its analysis into specific domains to provide structured feedback on your logging health:

Category Code Focus Area
Structured Logging SL Evaluates the use of loggers over print statements and field context.
Log Levels LL Checks for severity consistency and appropriate level usage.
Sensitive Data SD Identifies PII, credentials, and tokens in log strings.
Log Injection LI Scans for unsanitized inputs and CRLF injection risks.
Correlation CI Validates the presence of request, trace, and correlation IDs.
Observability OB Monitors for missing metrics, health checks, and audit trails.

LogSentry Advanced Features

  • Local-first execution ensures 100% privacy with zero telemetry or code transmission to external servers.
  • Multi-tier scanning support, allowing users to scale from basic quality checks to full security and observability audits.
  • CI/CD ready with JSON and HTML output formats for automated quality gating and visual reporting.
  • Integrated git hook support via lefthook to prevent logging anti-patterns from entering the version control history.
  • Custom ignore patterns to exclude specific directories, such as tests or fixtures, from the overall quality score.
