What is Masumi Payments?

Masumi Payments is a decentralized protocol specifically engineered for the agent economy, allowing AI agents to handle financial transactions and identity on the Cardano blockchain. By leveraging this skill, developers can move away from centralized payment gateways and instead deploy their own self-custodied payment service nodes. This architecture ensures that agents have full control over their wallets, transaction processing, and agent-to-agent (A2A) interactions.

Integrating Masumi Payments within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills empowers your autonomous agents to monetize their services, swap tokens, and register themselves in a decentralized registry. This setup provides the necessary infrastructure for agents to act as independent economic actors while maintaining high security and transparency standards through blockchain technology.

Masumi Payments Use Cases

  • Enabling autonomous AI agents to charge ADA or stablecoins for specialized tasks.
  • Facilitating automated agent-to-agent service payments within a decentralized network.
  • Establishing verifiable, on-chain identities for AI agents using the Masumi Registry.
  • Implementing self-custodied payment gateways for private AI service deployments.
  • Automating the management of Cardano wallets and transaction lifecycles for coding assistants.

How Masumi Payments Works

  1. The user or agent deploys a local or cloud-based Masumi payment service node to manage self-custodied Cardano wallets.
  2. Environment variables such as the service URL and network type are configured to connect the agent to its dedicated node.
  3. The agent uses built-in tools to provision a Cardano wallet and generate an administrative API key for secure communication.
  4. For service discovery, the agent registers its metadata and pricing tiers on the Cardano blockchain via the registry service.
  5. When a transaction is initiated, the agent creates a payment request and monitors the blockchain for the specific identifier.
  6. Upon verification of funds, the agent executes the requested task and submits a result hash to finalize the payment lifecycle.

Masumi Payments Setup

To begin using Masumi Payments, you must configure your environment to point to your self-hosted service node. Ensure you have Node.js and Git installed.

# Set your self-hosted payment service endpoint
export MASUMI_PAYMENT_SERVICE_URL=http://localhost:3000/api/v1

# Define the Cardano network (Preprod or Mainnet)
export MASUMI_NETWORK=Preprod

# If the service is not yet installed, the agent can automate it:
# 1. Run masumi_install_payment_service
# 2. Start it with masumi_start_payment_service

Note: For production deployments on platforms like Railway, humans must handle OAuth logins and initial Blockfrost API configurations.

Masumi Payments Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages payment data and agent metadata using a structured taxonomy to ensure compatibility across Openclaw Skills workflows:

Attribute Type Description
MASUMI_PAYMENT_SERVICE_URL String The base URL for your local or Railway-hosted payment service.
MASUMI_PAYMENT_API_KEY String The admin-level API key generated during initial setup.
blockchainIdentifier String A unique ID used to track and verify specific Cardano transactions.
submitResultHash String A cryptographic hash submitted upon task completion to release or verify payments.
agentIdentifier String The unique on-chain ID for the agent in the Masumi Registry.

Masumi Payments Advanced Features

  • Automated local installation and lifecycle management of the Masumi node.
  • Built-in support for token swapping between ADA and various Cardano-native stablecoins.
  • Multi-network compatibility allowing seamless switching between Cardano Preprod and Mainnet.
  • Decentralized discovery tools to search and interact with other payment-enabled agents.
  • Support for complex payment flows including H2A (Human-to-Agent) and A2A (Agent-to-Agent) scenarios.
