What is Memory Assistant?

Memory Assistant is a markdown-first knowledge workflow for Openclaw Skills that helps an AI coding agent record short-term observations in date-based daily notes, search past entries by keyword or date, and distill durable information into a central MEMORY.md file.

It is built for high-signal personal knowledge management: keep daily notes concise, use consistent filenames and tags, and periodically promote important decisions, project context, and recurring facts into long-term memory so they are easy to retrieve later.

Memory Assistant Use Cases

  • Logging daily progress, quick thoughts, and implementation notes
  • Searching historical conversations, decisions, or forgotten context by keyword
  • Summarizing repeated insights from daily notes into durable memory
  • Tracking project progress across multiple sessions
  • Maintaining a lightweight markdown knowledge base for Openclaw Skills workflows

How Memory Assistant Works

  1. Create a daily note named memory/YYYY-MM-DD.md for the current day.
  2. Append concise Markdown entries for tasks completed, ideas, decisions, and context.
  3. Search the memory/ folder with rg when you need to find a keyword or topic.
  4. Open a date-specific file with tools like head to inspect a particular day quickly.
  5. Review recent daily notes and promote important information into MEMORY.md.
  6. Keep filenames, tags, and phrasing consistent so Openclaw Skills can retrieve information reliably.

Memory Assistant Setup

Memory Assistant is file-based and requires no package install. Create a markdown workspace, make sure rg is available for search, and establish the daily-note convention used by Openclaw Skills.

mkdir -p memory
touch MEMORY.md
# Add a new daily note
echo 'Today completed a memory workflow setup.' >> memory/$(date +%Y-%m-%d).md

# Search all memory files
rg 'keyword' memory/*.md

# Inspect a specific day
head -50 memory/2026-07-15.md

# Manually consolidate long-term memory
nano MEMORY.md

Best practice: keep memory/ for short-term daily notes and MEMORY.md for distilled long-term knowledge.

Memory Assistant Data Schema & Taxonomy

Artifact Path / Pattern Purpose Conventions
Daily note memory/YYYY-MM-DD.md Capture short-term daily activity, ideas, and context One file per day; plain Markdown; searchable by date or keyword
Long-term memory MEMORY.md Store consolidated durable knowledge, decisions, and recurring facts Keep concise; update manually from daily notes
Search space memory/*.md Full-text retrieval across the archive Query with rg and date-based filenames
Metadata taxonomy filename date, keywords, tags, importance Organize and prioritize content No required YAML/frontmatter; uses consistent naming and in-text labels

Guidelines:

  • Prefer short, high-signal entries.
  • Use consistent terminology and tags so Openclaw Skills can search reliably.
  • Promote only durable information into MEMORY.md.

Memory Assistant Advanced Features

  • Date-addressable recall with YYYY-MM-DD filenames
  • Full-text search using rg across all daily notes
  • Long-term memory distillation from daily notes into MEMORY.md
  • Lightweight, editor-agnostic workflow for any Markdown editor or terminal
  • Project progress tracking without a database or external service
  • Consistency-first naming and tagging to improve retrieval quality in Openclaw Skills
