What is Message Chunker?

Message Chunker is a vital utility within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem designed to handle the technical constraints of messaging platforms like Feishu (Lark), Telegram, Discord, and WhatsApp. It ensures that long-form content—such as detailed technical reports, complex project plans, or extensive system logs—is delivered reliably without being truncated or rejected by the receiving API.

The skill analyzes the structure of your content to make intelligent splitting decisions. Rather than cutting text mid-sentence, it respects Markdown hierarchy, ensuring that chapters, tables, and paragraphs remain logically intact across multiple messages. This maintains readability and professional formatting even when dealing with massive data payloads.

Message Chunker Use Cases

  • Sending long analytical reports or project proposals that exceed 4,000 characters.
  • Automated delivery of long system logs or debugging output to developer channels.
  • Transmitting complex data tables that need to stay formatted correctly.
  • Retrying failed message deliveries that returned Status 400 errors due to length constraints.

How Message Chunker Works

  1. The Openclaw Skills agent detects a message payload exceeding the defined character limit (default 4000).
  2. The system scans the content for natural break points, prioritizing horizontal rules (---), then headings (##), and finally empty lines.
  3. Content is divided into chunks that fit within specific platform limits (e.g., 2000 for Discord, 4000 for Feishu).
  4. Each chunk is formatted with a continuation marker (e.g., Part 1/n) to inform the user that more content is coming.
  5. The agent sequentially sends the chunks, ensuring the logical flow of information remains intact.

Message Chunker Setup

To enable this skill, configure the parameters in your Openclaw Skills configuration file. Add the following to your TOOLS.md:

message-chunker:
  maxChunkSize: 4000
  splitOnHeadings: true
  splitOnTables: true
  includeContinuation: true

Message Chunker Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages message delivery using a priority-based logic for segmentation:

Feature Description Default Value
maxChunkSize The maximum number of characters per message 4000
splitOnHeadings Forces a new chunk at Markdown heading levels true
splitOnTables Ensures tables are not split internally true
retryQueue Stores failed chunks for subsequent attempts Automated

Manual intervention is also supported using the {{CHUNK}} marker within your raw text.

Message Chunker Advanced Features

  • Smart Table Protection: Automatically detects Markdown tables and prevents them from being split across messages to preserve layout.
  • Manual Chunk Markers: Users can insert {{CHUNK}} at specific locations for precise control over message breaks.
  • Platform-Specific Presets: Pre-configured limits for popular APIs (Lark/Feishu, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp).
  • Failure Recovery: If a message fails after chunking, the skill automatically logs the segment into a failure queue for manual review or retry.
