What is Verified Agent Identity?

Verified Agent Identity is a powerful toolset for managing decentralized identities (DIDs) within the AI agent ecosystem. Built on the iden3 self-sovereign identity protocol and the Billions Network, it allows agents to move beyond simple API keys into the world of verifiable, on-chain identities. This skill is a core component of Openclaw Skills, enabling secure interactions through Billions ERC-8004 and Attestation Registries.

By leveraging this skill, developers can bridge the gap between autonomous agents and human accountability. It provides a standardized way to generate authentication proofs, verify ownership signatures, and manage identity metadata. Whether you are building a multi-agent system or an AI-to-human service, this skill ensures that every participant has a cryptographically verifiable presence on the Billions Network.

Verified Agent Identity Use Cases

  • Linking an AI agent identity to a specific human owner for accountability.
  • Signing cryptographic challenges to prove agent identity during interactions.
  • Verifying signatures from other agents or users to confirm ownership of a DID.
  • Managing decentralized identities (DIDs) for agents operating in permissioned environments.
  • Using shared JWT tokens for secure authentication between services.

How Verified Agent Identity Works

  1. Identity Generation: The agent creates a new identity using the Billions Network protocol, generating a private key and a unique DID.
  2. Local Storage: Keys and identity metadata are securely stored in a localized directory for compatibility with Openclaw Skills.
  3. Challenge Creation: A random challenge is generated when a verification request is initiated.
  4. Signing and Linking: The agent signs the challenge and uses the Billions ERC-8004 Registry to link the agent DID to a human user.
  5. Verification: Third parties use the provided token and DID to verify the signature against the Attestation Registry, confirming the identity.

Verified Agent Identity Setup

To get started with this skill, navigate to the script directory and install the necessary dependencies:

cd scripts && npm install && cd ..

Create a new identity and link it to your human DID with these commands:

# Step 1: Create a new identity
node scripts/createNewEthereumIdentity.js

# Step 2: Sign the challenge and generate a verification URL
node scripts/linkHumanToAgent.js --challenge '{"name": "AGENT_NAME", "description": "SHORT_DESCRIPTION"}'

Verified Agent Identity Data Schema & Taxonomy

All identity data is organized within the $HOME/.openclaw/billions directory to ensure seamless integration with Openclaw Skills. The taxonomy is structured as follows:

File Description
kms.json Contains sensitive private keys (encrypted or plaintext).
defaultDid.json Stores the default DID identifiers and public keys.
challenges.json A history of authentication challenges generated and received.
credentials.json Stores issued verifiable credentials for the agent.
identities.json General metadata for all locally stored identities.
profiles.json Extended profile information and persona data.

Verified Agent Identity Advanced Features

  • Support for importing existing private keys to maintain identity across different environments.
  • Multi-identity management allowing an agent to switch between various DIDs via getIdentities.js.
  • Integrated attestation flow that combines signing and human-linking into a single logical workflow.
  • Automated JWT (JWS) token generation for high-level application layer authentication.
  • Built-in guardrails to prevent manual cryptographic errors and ensure protocol compliance.
