What is Mission Control?

Mission Control provides a visual interface for humans to manage tasks that are executed by AI agents. By utilizing a Kanban board hosted on GitHub Pages, users can prioritize work and move items into execution columns where the agent takes over. As one of the most structured Openclaw Skills, it bridges the gap between human project management and automated agent labor by maintaining a shared state through a centralized JSON repository.

The skill enables a seamless transition from planning to production. When a human moves a task to In Progress, the agent immediately receives a work order, processes the subtasks, and updates the board with progress comments and status changes. This ensures that both the human and the AI are always in sync regarding project milestones.

Mission Control Use Cases

  • Managing complex software development cycles using Openclaw Skills to automate subtask execution.
  • Tracking recurring system maintenance and daily recurring tasks via the permanent status.
  • Orchestrating multi-step projects (EPICs) where the agent completes sequential child tickets.
  • Providing a transparent, web-based dashboard for stakeholders to monitor AI agent progress in real-time.

How Mission Control Works

  1. The human manager creates and prioritizes tasks on the web dashboard hosted on GitHub.
  2. When a task is moved to In Progress, GitHub sends a push event through a Tailscale Funnel webhook.
  3. The webhook transform compares task versions to detect status changes and triggers the agent.
  4. The AI agent reads the task description, subtasks, and Definition of Done (DoD) to begin work.
  5. The agent uses the mc-update.sh CLI to provide live updates, mark subtasks as finished, and move the task to Review once complete.

Mission Control Setup

To deploy this skill, ensure you have Tailscale and the GitHub CLI configured. Then, initiate the automated setup with your agent.

# Check prerequisites
tailscale status
tailscale funnel 18789
gh auth status

# Request setup from your AI agent
"Set up Mission Control for my workspace"

Mission Control Data Schema & Taxonomy

Task data is organized in the data/tasks.json file, allowing for easy version control and manual edits. This structure is a core component of how Openclaw Skills maintain persistence.

Field Type Description
id String Unique identifier for the task.
status String Current state: backlog, in_progress, review, done, or permanent.
subtasks Array List of sub-items with title and completion boolean.
dod String Definition of Done providing success criteria for the agent.
comments Array A log of progress updates and feedback from the agent or human.

Mission Control Advanced Features

  • EPIC management for handling parent-child task relationships and sequential execution workflows.
  • Heartbeat integration to monitor for stale tasks and ensure consistent agent activity.
  • Webhook HMAC verification providing secure communication within the Openclaw Skills framework.
  • Automated documentation and progress summaries generated by the agent upon task completion.
  • Flexible CLI tools for manual task manipulation, status overrides, and repository synchronization.
