What is NeverDie?

NeverDie is a specialized resilience layer for AI agents, designed to eliminate the risk of cascading model failures. It ensures that your Openclaw Skills stay operational even during major provider outages by mandating a diversified fallback chain that includes multiple cloud providers and a local Ollama instance. Unlike standard tools, NeverDie operates as a standalone monitor that does not require an active LLM to function, providing a true safety net for your automation infrastructure.

By prioritizing provider diversity, NeverDie prevents situations where a single API outage (like an Anthropic or OpenAI downtime) brings your entire system to a halt. It serves as an essential utility for developers who need high availability and reliable failure detection for their Openclaw Skills deployment.

NeverDie Use Cases

  • Preventing total agent downtime during cloud provider outages.
  • Ensuring high availability for production Openclaw Skills.
  • Monitoring LLM health without relying on an active LLM connection.
  • Automatically falling back to local models when rate limits are hit.
  • Receiving instant Telegram alerts when model chains are compromised.

How NeverDie Works

  1. The skill diagnoses the current OpenClaw configuration to identify single-provider dependencies and missing local fallbacks.
  2. It guides the user to restructure the fallback chain using a mix of cloud providers (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI) and local Ollama models.
  3. A standalone Node.js monitor script is deployed to the local workspace, operating independently of the LLM logic.
  4. A system-level cron job is registered to execute the monitor at regular intervals (default every 5 minutes).
  5. The monitor scans system logs for specific failure patterns like rate limits, authentication errors, or timeouts.
  6. If a critical failure is detected, the monitor writes a local alert file and sends a notification via Telegram if configured.

NeverDie Setup

To deploy NeverDie for your Openclaw Skills, follow these steps:

# 1. Copy the monitor script to your workspace
cp ~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/neverdie/scripts/fallback-monitor.js ~/.openclaw/workspace/fallback-monitor.js
chmod +x ~/.openclaw/workspace/fallback-monitor.js

# 2. (Optional) Configure Telegram Alerts
# Create ~/.openclaw/workspace/.neverdie-config.json with your credentials:
# {"telegramBotToken": "...", "telegramChatId": "..."}

# 3. Verify the installation and monitor status
node ~/.openclaw/workspace/fallback-monitor.js --status

NeverDie Data Schema & Taxonomy

NeverDie maintains minimal, secure data structures to manage resilience for Openclaw Skills:

File Name Description Key Metadata
.neverdie-config.json Configuration file Telegram tokens, chat IDs, and alert cooldowns.
.fallback-alert-latest.json Health status file Timestamp of last failure and error categorization.
fallback-monitor.js Execution logic Standalone Node.js script using built-in modules.
openclaw.json Source config Monitored for primary and fallback model provider IDs.

NeverDie Advanced Features

  • Provider Diversity Enforcement: Automatically flags chains that rely on a single point of failure.
  • Standalone Monitoring: Runs as a systemEvent cron job, meaning it works even when no LLMs are available.
  • Zero-Dependency Security: Built using only Node.js core modules (fs, path, https) to minimize the attack surface.
  • Local Safety Net: Specifically prioritizes Ollama integration as the final, un-rate-limited fallback layer.
  • Idempotent Registration: Setup scripts are designed to be run multiple times without duplicating system tasks.
