What is NewsCatcher?

NewsCatcher is a robust news aggregation and analysis tool designed for developers building applications that require real-time access to a worldwide database of news. By leveraging this integration within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, users can programmatically search for articles based on specific keywords, extract full-text content, and generate concise summaries of complex news stories.

The skill simplifies the developer experience by utilizing Membrane to manage the entire authentication lifecycle. This ensures that your AI agents can focus on data analysis and insight generation rather than the complexities of API key management and credential refreshing, making it an essential tool for media monitoring, financial analysis, and competitive intelligence.

NewsCatcher Use Cases

  • Monitoring global news for specific company mentions or financial market triggers.
  • Building automated news digest services that extract and summarize daily top stories.
  • Performing sentiment analysis on real-time news feeds for specific industries.
  • Researching historical news data to identify long-term media trends.
  • Enhancing AI research agents with up-to-the-minute global information.

How NewsCatcher Works

  1. Initialization: The user installs the Membrane CLI and authenticates their environment using the Openclaw Skills agent type.
  2. Connection Establishment: A secure connection to the NewsCatcher API is established, with Membrane handling the OAuth or API key handshake.
  3. Action Discovery: The agent uses natural language intent to search for available actions like 'Search Articles' or 'Summarize' via the CLI.
  4. Execution: The AI agent triggers specific actions with JSON parameters, retrieving structured news data or summarized content.
  5. API Proxying: For advanced needs, the agent can send direct requests through a managed proxy that automatically injects required headers and manages credential refreshes.

NewsCatcher Setup

First, install the Membrane CLI globally:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Next, login and specify your agent type to optimize the Openclaw Skills experience:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Ensure a connection to the NewsCatcher API exists:

membrane connection ensure "https://newscatcherapi.com/" --json

If the connection state is CLIENT_ACTION_REQUIRED, follow the provided uiUrl to complete authentication in your browser.

NewsCatcher Data Schema & Taxonomy

The NewsCatcher skill organizes data around articles and search queries. Below is the primary metadata and data structure utilized:

Object Fields / Capabilities Description
Search Result id, name, inputSchema, outputSchema Metadata for locating and executing search actions.
Article title, author, publish_date, content The core data object containing article details.
Summary summary_text, article_id AI-generated summary of a specific news article.
Connection id, state, clientAction The status and configuration of the NewsCatcher integration.

NewsCatcher Advanced Features

  • Automated Auth Lifecycle: Never manage secrets locally; Membrane handles server-side credential refreshes transparently.
  • Natural Language Intent Discovery: Find the right API tools by describing your goal in plain English through the CLI.
  • Direct API Proxying: Access the full breadth of the NewsCatcher API using membrane request while retaining managed authentication.
  • Long-polling Connection Management: Use the --wait flag to handle asynchronous connection building in headless environments.
  • JSON Output Mode: All commands support a --json flag for seamless integration into automated AI workflows and scripts.
