What is NocoDB?

The NocoDB skill provides a comprehensive bridge between AI agents and NocoDB instances, whether cloud-based or self-hosted. As an open-source Airtable alternative, NocoDB turns any database into a smart spreadsheet, and this skill for Openclaw Skills makes those capabilities accessible via a structured CLI. It supports the full lifecycle of data management, from creating workspaces and bases to handling complex record queries and schema modifications using the REST API v3.

NocoDB Use Cases

  • Synchronizing data between external services and NocoDB bases using automated agents.
  • Building automated reporting dashboards by querying records with advanced logical filters.
  • Rapidly prototyping database schemas and managing tables through CLI commands.
  • Managing file attachments and linked records programmatically within a spreadsheet interface.
  • Facilitating team collaboration through automated member and role management in Enterprise environments.

How NocoDB Works

  1. Authentication is established by setting the NOCODB_TOKEN and optional NOCODB_URL for the target instance.
  2. The skill uses the nc command to traverse the platform hierarchy from workspaces down to individual records.
  3. Requests are sent to the NocoDB REST API v3, supporting both standard operations and enterprise-exclusive endpoints.
  4. Data is fetched or modified based on user-defined parameters such as complex filter expressions and sort objects.
  5. Structured JSON responses are returned, ensuring the data is ready for further processing by other Openclaw Skills in your workflow.

NocoDB Setup

To begin using NocoDB with Openclaw Skills, configure your environment with the following variables:

export NOCODB_TOKEN="your-api-token"
# Required: Set to your instance URL (defaults to cloud)
export NOCODB_URL="https://app.nocodb.com"

Retrieve your token from the NocoDB dashboard under Team & Settings -> API Tokens. Once configured, verify your connection by listing available workspaces:

nc workspace:list

NocoDB Data Schema & Taxonomy

The NocoDB skill organizes data according to the platform's relational structure. Users can reference entities by human-readable names or by their unique ID prefixes for faster resolution within Openclaw Skills workflows.

Entity ID Prefix Example
Workspace w wabc123xyz
Base p pdef456uvw
Table m mghi789rst
Field c cjkl012opq
View vw vwmno345abc

Record data is processed as JSON objects, typically containing a fields key with key-value pairs representing the table columns.

NocoDB Advanced Features

  • Robust filter syntax supporting advanced logical operators like ~and, ~or, and ~not for precise data extraction.
  • Full support for many-to-many and one-to-many linked record relationships to manage complex data structures.
  • Automated file attachment uploads directly to table fields using local file paths.
  • Enterprise-tier capabilities including automated view management, script execution, and team permission controls.
  • High-performance ID resolution mode enabled via the NOCODB_VERBOSE flag for building efficient Openclaw Skills automations.
