What is Notelane?

Notelane is a robust, local-first productivity engine designed for developers and power users who prefer the efficiency of the command line. As part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it transforms your terminal into a personal knowledge base, allowing you to capture ideas, track project progress, and manage daily streaks without ever leaving your workflow.

Built entirely in Bash with zero external dependencies, Notelane prioritizes data sovereignty and speed. It organizes information into specialized logs—ranging from planning and prioritization to weekly reviews—ensuring that every piece of professional or personal data is timestamped, searchable, and easily exportable for future use.

Notelane Use Cases

  • Capturing instantaneous meeting notes or technical decisions directly from the terminal.
  • Managing project lifecycles through dedicated planning, tracking, and prioritization logs.
  • Maintaining daily habit consistency using built-in streak tracking and reminders.
  • Conducting structured weekly retrospectives to document growth and technical hurdles.
  • Creating an auditable, timestamped timeline of events for project management or personal journals.

How Notelane Works

  1. The user executes a command via the Openclaw Skills interface or direct CLI, such as notelane add or notelane plan.
  2. If arguments are provided, Notelane generates a pipe-delimited entry formatted as YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|value.
  3. The entry is appended to the specific category log file (e.g., track.log) and the global history.log in the local data directory.
  4. If no arguments are provided, the skill retrieves and displays the 20 most recent entries from the requested category.
  5. Built-in utilities like search use grep-based logic to scan all local text files for instant information retrieval.

Notelane Setup

Notelane requires Bash 4.0+ and standard Unix utilities. No root privileges or internet connection are necessary for this Openclaw Skills integration.

Notelane Data Schema & Taxonomy

Notelane utilizes a flat-file, pipe-delimited taxonomy stored in ~/.local/share/notelane/. This structure ensures your Openclaw Skills data remains human-readable and portable.

File Type Purpose Format
*.log Category-specific entries (add, plan, track, etc.) YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|content
history.log Unified audit trail of every interaction YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|command|content
export.* Generated data dumps for external tools JSON, CSV, or TXT
status Metadata: entry counts, disk usage, and versioning Plain Text

Notelane Advanced Features

  • Full-text search across the entire knowledge base using optimized grep-based queries.
  • Multi-format data portability supporting JSON, CSV, and TXT exports for data analysis.
  • Automated audit logging through a unified history file to track workflow evolution.
  • Statistical reporting that aggregates activity counts across 18+ different productivity subcommands.
  • Local-first architecture ensuring zero latency and 100% privacy for sensitive notes.
