What is OneNote Notes?

The OneNote Notes skill integrates Microsoft OneNote into your AI development workspace, allowing your coding agent to interact with notebooks, sections, and pages. By leveraging the Microsoft Graph API through ClawLink's hosted connection flows, this skill eliminates the pain of configuring complex OAuth setups and API credentials yourself. It represents a powerful addition to the library of Openclaw Skills designed to streamline personal knowledge management and team documentation.

With this integration, the AI agent can read existing page content formatted as HTML, update pages using precise patch commands, create new sections, and manage SharePoint or Microsoft 365 group notebooks. All actions are executed through standard commands, providing a seamless way to incorporate real-time notes and structured reference materials into your software development or research workflow.

OneNote Notes Use Cases

  • Automating the creation of development logs, meeting minutes, or project planning pages directly in shared team notebooks.
  • Retrieving technical specifications, API guides, or architecture notes from OneNote to provide context during AI coding sessions.
  • Reorganizing personal knowledge bases by programmatically creating notebooks, moving sections, or copying content across groups.
  • Appending automated pipeline results, system alerts, or test summaries to dedicated monitoring pages in OneNote.

How OneNote Notes Works

  1. Plugin Integration: The OpenClaw agent invokes the underlying ClawLink plugin, routing requests through the secure ClawLink gateway.
  2. Authentication Flow: ClawLink handles the OAuth 2.0 connection, retrieving and safely injecting Microsoft Graph tokens without displaying keys in chat.
  3. Discovery: The agent verifies active integrations and retrieves the live tool schema using discovery tools to avoid guesswork.
  4. Execution Protocol: For read actions, the agent directly fetches the target notebook or section metadata. For write actions, the agent presents a preview and waits for explicit user confirmation before modifying HTML page content or creating resources.
  5. Response Delivery: The results, such as HTML page content or operation status, are parsed and returned to the OpenClaw user chat session.

OneNote Notes Setup

To get started, install and configure the verified ClawLink plugin from ClawHub:

openclaw plugins install clawhub:clawlink-plugin
openclaw config set tools.alsoAllow '["clawlink-plugin"]' --strict-json
openclaw gateway restart

Once restarted, send /new as a standalone message in your chat to reload the catalog.

Next, complete the authentication connection:

  1. Run clawlink_begin_pairing to link your device if not already paired.
  2. Open the ClawLink Dashboard and authorize the Microsoft OneNote integration.
  3. Verify the setup by listing your integrations and testing a command:
clawlink_list_integrations
clawlink_call_tool --tool "onenote_list_user_notebooks" --params '{"user_id": "me"}'

OneNote Notes Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill exposes structure and capabilities categorized by resource types across notebooks, sections, and pages.

Resource Structures

Resource Type Constraints & Parameters Update Mechanism
Notebooks Max 128 characters, avoids special characters. Read properties, create fresh notebooks, or copy existing shared resources.
Sections Max 50 characters, avoids special characters. Rename with displayName parameter. Other properties are read-only.
Pages Must consist of valid HTML with html, head, and body tags. Create directly in section or update existing page via HTML patch command lists.
Async Ops Poll status endpoint with Operation-Location. Checked via group operations tools for long-running copy actions.

Available Actions Matrix

  • Read Operations: List notebooks, list sections, fetch page content as HTML, preview SharePoint/Microsoft 365 pages.
  • Write Operations: Create notebooks, add sections, create pages, append/replace page elements via patch commands, copy sections.

OneNote Notes Advanced Features

  • HTML Patch Commands: Programmatically append, replace, or insert HTML elements into active OneNote pages using structured JSON patch operations.
  • Secure Credentials Delegation: Utilize enterprise-level OAuth flows hosted on ClawLink to access OneNote notebooks without storing static client secrets.
  • Asynchronous Processing: Perform bulk copy operations for SharePoint site or Microsoft 365 group notebooks and track their progression using dedicated polling tools.
  • Two-Step Write Safeguards: Minimize unintended modifications with a strict preview-before-commit workflow integrated into the core Openclaw Skills discovery system.
