What is open-market-data?

The open-market-data skill provides a comprehensive bridge to the world's most critical financial datasets. It aggregates access to eight distinct data providers—including SEC EDGAR, Yahoo Finance, and the Federal Reserve—into a single, easy-to-use interface. By integrating this skill into Openclaw Skills, developers can build robust financial agents capable of pulling real-time quotes, historical price data, and deep-dive economic series without managing individual API integrations.

This skill is designed for resilience and efficiency. It features intelligent routing that automatically selects the best source for specific data types and falls back to alternative providers if a primary source is unavailable or rate-limited. Whether you are analyzing corporate financials or tracking global GDP trends, this tool simplifies the data acquisition layer for any financial application.

open-market-data Use Cases

  • Automating the retrieval of SEC filings and insider transactions for equity research.
  • Fetching real-time cryptocurrency rankings and price history for portfolio monitoring.
  • Accessing macroeconomic data like GDP and unemployment rates via FRED for economic modeling.
  • Querying quarterly financial statements and options chains for technical analysis.
  • Building automated market-monitoring bots within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills.

How open-market-data Works

  1. The user or agent sends a command through the CLI, such as requesting a stock quote or economic indicator.
  2. The internal router analyzes the request and identifies the high-priority source for that specific data category (e.g., Yahoo Finance for quotes).
  3. The skill attempts to fetch the data from the primary source; if a failure or rate limit occurs, it automatically fails over to the next available provider in the hierarchy.
  4. Data is processed and formatted according to user preference, supporting both human-readable plain text and machine-readable JSON.
  5. The finalized data is returned to the user or passed to the next stage of the AI coding workflow.

open-market-data Setup

To get started with this skill, install the package via npm and configure your environment:

npm install -g open-market-data

Configure your API keys to unlock access to specific providers like FRED or Alpha Vantage:

omd config set fredApiKey <your_key>
omd config set alphaVantageApiKey <your_key>

Set your SEC EDGAR user agent as required by their fair access policy:

export EDGAR_USER_AGENT="YourName [email protected]"

open-market-data Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data into logical categories based on the source and query type. Below is the primary structure of available data:

Data Category Primary Source Secondary Sources
Stock Quotes Yahoo Finance Finnhub, Alpha Vantage
Financials SEC EDGAR Yahoo, Alpha Vantage
Crypto Binance CoinGecko
Macro Data FRED World Bank
SEC Filings SEC EDGAR N/A

All commands support the --json flag to return structured data for programmatic use within Openclaw Skills.

open-market-data Advanced Features

  • Intelligent Failover: Automatically switches between eight different providers to ensure data delivery.
  • Programmatic JSON Output: Native support for JSON formatting to facilitate integration with other automation tools.
  • Source Forcing: Use the --source flag to bypass the router and query a specific provider directly.
  • Cache Management: Built-in caching to improve speed and reduce API usage, with the ability to bypass when fresh data is required.
  • Universal Search: Search for company symbols or economic series IDs across multiple databases from a single command.
