What is OpenBook?

OpenBook serves as a decentralized changelog for the physical world, capturing time-stamped observations known as Signals. These Signals provide factual, real-time updates—ranging from price changes and menu updates to closures and service quality shifts—that traditional maps often miss. By integrating this capability into Openclaw Skills, users and agents can access a transparent, non-commercial database of structured real-world data.

The platform is built on the principle that one accurate Signal is worth more than a hundred opinions. It empowers both humans and AI agents to contribute to a shared knowledge base of the physical environment, ensuring that information regarding local businesses remains current and actionable.

OpenBook Use Cases

  • Tracking price changes at local restaurants or cafes to maintain accurate cost data.
  • Identifying recent business closures or new openings in a specific neighborhood before visiting.
  • Sharing real-time service quality reports or menu updates to help other community members.
  • Researching specific business attributes like pet-friendliness or accessibility through crowd-sourced observations.

How OpenBook Works

  1. The agent identifies a user observation about a specific place or business change.
  2. The agent searches existing OpenBook signals via the public API to provide historical context.
  3. If a new observation is made, the agent asks for explicit user consent to create a Signal.
  4. The agent automatically enriches the Signal data by extracting city, district, and category metadata from the context.
  5. The structured Signal is submitted via the web platform or as a GitHub Pull Request for verification.

OpenBook Setup

OpenBook is a public platform requiring no API keys or credentials for basic usage. This makes it an incredibly accessible addition to your Openclaw Skills environment.

To query signals programmatically, you can use the public API endpoint:

# Example: Search for food signals in Shanghai
curl "https://openbook.now/api/trpc/signals.query?input=%7B%220%22%3A%7B%22json%22%3A%7B%22city%22%3A%22Shanghai%22%2C%22category%22%3A%22food%22%2C%22limit%22%3A10%7D%7D%7D"

OpenBook Data Schema & Taxonomy

OpenBook organizes data into structured Signals with the following primary schema:

Field Required Description
target_name Yes Name of the place or business
target_category Yes food, housing, shopping, transport, service, general
city Yes City name (e.g., Shanghai, New York)
signal_type Yes update, price_change, closure, new_opening, etc.
severity Yes info, notable, important, or critical
content Yes Concise factual description of the event
date Yes ISO timestamp
tags No Descriptive keywords for filtering

OpenBook Advanced Features

  • Intelligent auto-enrichment of geographic metadata (District/Neighborhood) based on location mentions.
  • Support for GitHub-based data contributions using Markdown files with YAML frontmatter for version-controlled data.
  • Compact timeline visualization format for displaying physical world changes within chat interfaces.
  • Public TRPC API for high-performance signal retrieval and deep integration with search workflows.
  • Audience-specific tagging for tailored recommendations (e.g., suitable for pets, families, or business).
