What is OpenClaw Backup?

The OpenClaw Backup skill is a critical tool for developers and users who need to ensure the persistence and security of their AI agent environments. It automates the process of archiving the entire configuration directory into compressed tarball files, covering everything from API keys to agent memory. By integrating this skill into your Openclaw Skills workflow, you gain the ability to perform point-in-time recoveries and maintain environment stability through automated maintenance routines.

OpenClaw Backup Use Cases

  • Creating manual snapshots before performing major configuration changes or updates.
  • Scheduling automated daily backups to prevent data loss from system failures.
  • Migrating an existing OpenClaw setup and agent workspace to a new machine.
  • Managing storage space by automatically rotating and purging old backup archives.

How OpenClaw Backup Works

  1. The user or a scheduled task executes the backup script which targets the core configuration directory.
  2. The script filters the data, including critical items like openclaw.json and agent profiles while excluding transient data like logs and cache.
  3. A timestamped .tar.gz archive is created in the specified backup directory (defaulting to ~/openclaw-backups/).
  4. The system applies a rotation policy, automatically retaining the seven most recent backups to optimize disk usage.
  5. During a restore operation, the active gateway is stopped, and the chosen archive is extracted to return the environment to its previous state.

OpenClaw Backup Setup

To initiate a manual backup, execute the script from your terminal:

./scripts/backup.sh ~/openclaw-backups/

To configure automated daily backups at 3:00 AM UTC using Openclaw Skills, use the following cron configuration:

{
  "name": "daily-backup",
  "schedule": {"kind": "cron", "expr": "0 3 * * *", "tz": "UTC"},
  "payload": {
    "kind": "agentTurn",
    "message": "Run ~/.openclaw/backup.sh and report result to user."
  },
  "sessionTarget": "isolated",
  "delivery": {"mode": "announce"}
}
