What is notion-sync?

notion-sync is a specialized utility designed to bridge the gap between local file systems and Notion workspaces. By treating directories as parent pages and files as sub-pages, it allows developers to maintain a synchronized documentation hierarchy without manual updates. This tool is a vital part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, providing a programmatic and CLI-driven way to ensure that project notes, readmes, and technical docs are always up-to-date in a collaborative cloud environment.

notion-sync Use Cases

  • Mirroring local software documentation or Git repositories to a centralized Notion workspace for team access.
  • Synchronizing personal knowledge management (PKM) folders from a local machine into Notion via Openclaw Skills.
  • Automating the upload of system logs or project status reports into organized Notion hierarchies.
  • maintaining a live, searchable backup of Markdown-based project structures within the Notion ecosystem.

How notion-sync Works

  1. The user initializes the local directory by providing a Notion integration token and a root page ID to create a .notion-sync.json configuration.
  2. The skill scans the local directory tree, filtering out files based on default or user-defined ignore patterns.
  3. It maps the local folder structure to Notion's page hierarchy, creating new pages or identifying existing ones using a folder cache.
  4. For every file, it calculates an MD5 checksum to determine if the content has changed since the last sync.
  5. Content is automatically split into 1800-character blocks to comply with Notion API limits and then pushed to the platform as blocks.

notion-sync Setup

Install the tool globally using npm:

npm install -g @kitakitsune/notion-sync

Initialize your local workspace to link it with a Notion page:

notion-sync init --token ntn_xxx --page <notion-page-id> [--dir <path>]

Run the synchronization command to push your files:

notion-sync sync

notion-sync Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages state through a .notion-sync.json file which tracks configuration and file integrity.

Property Type Description
path string The absolute path to the local source directory.
notion.token string The integration token used for Notion API authentication.
notion.rootPageId string The ID of the parent page in Notion where syncing begins.
ignore array A list of glob patterns to exclude files and folders.
checksums object A map of file paths to MD5 hashes used for diff-only syncing.

notion-sync Advanced Features

  • Differential Syncing: Use the --diff flag to skip unchanged files and optimize API usage within Openclaw Skills workflows.
  • Dry Run Support: Preview all planned hierarchy and content changes with the --dry-run flag before execution.
  • Programmatic API: Integrate sync logic directly into TypeScript or JavaScript projects for custom automation pipelines.
  • Automated Content Chunking: Seamlessly handles large documents by splitting content into API-compliant blocks automatically.
