What is Flight Tracker?

The Flight Tracker skill is a powerful utility for Openclaw Skills designed to provide real-time aeronautical data directly to your AI agent. It leverages the OpenSky Network to fetch live telemetry, including altitude, speed, heading, and vertical rate, without requiring any complex API keys or initial configuration.

By integrating this skill, users can transform their AI workspace into a flight monitoring station. Whether you are tracking a specific long-haul flight by its radio callsign or identifying aircraft currently flying over a specific set of geographic coordinates, this tool delivers structured data optimized for both human readability and machine processing.

Flight Tracker Use Cases

  • Tracking the live progress and telemetry of a specific flight using its ICAO radio callsign.
  • Identifying all aircraft currently airborne within a specific radius of a user's current latitude and longitude.
  • Monitoring vertical rates and speeds of flights during takeoff or landing phases.
  • Fetching structured JSON flight data for integration into custom aviation dashboards or multi-agent workflows.

How Flight Tracker Works

  1. The user provides a flight number, callsign, or geographic coordinates to the Openclaw Skills agent.
  2. The skill invokes the flight-tracker CLI tool with the specified parameters and requested output format.
  3. The tool queries the OpenSky Network API to retrieve the most recent state vectors for the airborne aircraft.
  4. Automatic rate limiting and exponential backoff are applied to ensure compliance with free-tier access constraints.
  5. The retrieved telemetry data is parsed and returned to the agent as either a summarized table or a clean JSON object.

Flight Tracker Setup

The Flight Tracker skill is available via the flight-tracker-cli package. You can install it using pip as part of your Openclaw Skills environment:

pip install flight-tracker-cli

No additional API keys are required for the standard free-tier usage.

Flight Tracker Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill provides two primary output structures depending on the selected flag. When using --format json, the data follows this schema:

Field Description
callsign The ICAO radio callsign (e.g., BAW117)
altitude Current barometric altitude in meters
velocity Ground speed in meters per second
heading True track in degrees clockwise from north
vert_rate Vertical rate in meters per second (positive for climb)
lat / lon Current geographic coordinates of the aircraft

Flight Tracker Advanced Features

  • Automatic Rate Limiting: Built-in handling for OpenSky free-tier limits with configurable --retries and --timeout settings.
  • Flexible Radius Search: Customize the search area for overhead flights using the --radius parameter (default is 50km).
  • Machine-Readable Outputs: Use the --format json flag to pipe live telemetry directly into other AI agents or data processing pipelines.
  • Low Latency Retries: Configurable exponential backoff to handle network congestion or API throttling seamlessly.
