What is PerryTS?

PerryTS is an innovative native TypeScript compiler engineered to shift TypeScript execution away from traditional runtimes like Node.js or V8. By parsing code through SWC and emitting native binaries via LLVM, it offers lightning-fast execution speed, reduced memory overhead, and minimal binary sizes. The compiler features cross-platform compilation targeting macOS, iOS, Windows, Linux, Android, and WebAssembly, enabling ultra-portable application delivery.

Built for high-performance development, PerryTS introduces first-class multi-threading via data parallelism and background task spawning without common thread-safety issues. Additionally, it ships with comprehensive standard library abstractions, native UI and Terminal UI sub-ecosystems, compile-time internationalization, and an HTTP-driven testing engine. Integrating this capability into Openclaw Skills allows AI coding agents to efficiently build, test, debug, and ship standalone native desktop and mobile applications written entirely in type-safe TypeScript.

PerryTS Use Cases

  • Building Native Standalone Applications: Compile TypeScript files directly into platform-specific executable binaries without bundling V8, Node.js, or heavyweight runtimes.
  • Cross-Platform Target Compilation: Cross-compile identical codebases effortlessly for macOS, iOS, Windows, Linux, Android, WebAssembly, and embedded widgets.
  • High-Performance Multi-Threading: Execute computational tasks across multiple OS threads with safe closure variables and zero-overhead array processing.
  • Native Desktop & Terminal UIs: Design declarative native application interfaces using platform controls or build dense, double-buffered ANSI terminal interfaces.
  • Automated UI Testing via Geisterhand: Enable an embedded HTTP server to programmatically click, type, screenshot, or inject chaos testing into running app instances.

How PerryTS Works

  1. Code Parsing: The compiler ingests .ts files and leverages SWC to perform fast, highly scalable abstract syntax tree (AST) parsing.
  2. Type Erasure & HIR Generation: TypeScript-specific types are erased at compile time, and the compiler transforms the codebase into a High-level Intermediate Representation (HIR).
  3. LLVM Code Generation: The HIR is downcompiled and optimized through an LLVM backend, outputting highly efficient native binary instructions.
  4. Standard Library Routing: References to popular packages (like Axios, Fastify, or Better-SQLite3) are automatically routed into integrated Rust native implementations.
  5. Binary Distribution Compilation: The pipeline outputs self-contained binary execution files, shared libraries (.dylib), or production packages for specific targets.

PerryTS Setup

Prerequisites

Install the platform-specific compiler tools based on your operating system:

  • macOS: xcode-select --install
  • Linux: apt install build-essential
  • Windows: winget install LLVM.LLVM && perry setup windows

Toolchain Installation

Choose your preferred package manager to download and verify PerryTS:

# Recommended installation (Requires Node >= 16)
npm install @perryts/perry

# Alternative macOS installation
brew install perryts/perry/perry

# Alternative Windows installation
winget install PerryTS.Perry

# Verify your local environment and toolchain installation
perry doctor; perry --version

PerryTS Data Schema & Taxonomy

Configuration Architecture

PerryTS builds project configurations using sequential hierarchy resolution: CLI flags override environment variables, which override perry.toml, which defaults to the global user configuration.

Core Schema Configuration (perry.toml)

Section Parameter Type Description
[project] name String Unique moniker of the application binary
[project] entry String Path location of the source entrypoint file
[build] out_dir String Destination directory for compiled native binaries
[i18n] locales Array Supported locale strings (e.g., ["en", "de"])
[macos] distribute String Targets distribution via "appstore", "notarize", or "both"
[linux] format String Distribution packaging style: "appimage", "deb", or "rpm"

Binary Payload Reference Table

Compilation Footprint Estimated Size Included Core Modules
Bare-Minimum Binary ~300KB Pure logic execution, no standard library dependencies
File Management Utility ~3MB Incorporates standard fs and path handling layers
Graphical User Interface ~3MB Includes perry/ui windowing and desktop engine layers
Full Stack Environment ~48MB Comprehensive compilation including databases, crypto, and utilities

PerryTS Advanced Features

  • Data & Task Parallelism: Leverages parallelMap and parallelFilter to auto-detect CPU cores, and runs concurrent code snippets seamlessly inside non-blocking OS threads using spawn.
  • Dynamic Plugin Architecture: Dynamically loads external dynamic libraries (.dylib) at runtime to hook events or inject functional tools using loadPlugin and registerHook.
  • Automated Geisterhand Engine: Launches a native local HTTP control server on port 7676 to capture screenshots, fetch widget states, handle element handles, or perform UI chaos testing.
  • Zero-Runtime Overhead i18n: Validates localizations during compilation and embeds extracted target phrases directly into binary structures using perry i18n extract.
  • Native Binding Bridge: Connects custom user layers into low-level stable ABIs through a sequential architecture spanning TS bindings, perry-ffi, and perry-runtime.
