What is Pilot Relay?

Pilot Relay is a sophisticated communication skill designed to handle the complexities of distributed agent networks. By utilizing the Pilot Protocol, it implements a robust store-and-forward architecture that allows agents to send messages to peers who may be temporarily unavailable or behind restrictive network configurations. Unlike real-time chat, this Openclaw Skills component focuses on reliability and eventual consistency, making it a cornerstone for resilient AI infrastructure.

The skill leverages end-to-end encryption through registered rendezvous servers, ensuring that while messages are temporarily stored on relay nodes, the content remains private and secure. It effectively bridges the gap for agents operating in environments with intermittent connectivity or symmetric NAT issues, providing a seamless asynchronous messaging layer.

Pilot Relay Use Cases

  • Sending critical updates or instructions to AI agents that operate on intermittent schedules.
  • Implementing guaranteed eventual delivery for distributed tasks where real-time connectivity is not guaranteed.
  • Managing asynchronous communication patterns across multi-agent systems using Openclaw Skills.
  • Bypassing network limitations like symmetric NAT that prevent direct peer-to-peer connections.

How Pilot Relay Works

  1. The sender agent attempts to locate the target peer using the pilotctl find command.
  2. If the peer is offline or unreachable, the system automatically queues the message for relaying.
  3. The message is encrypted end-to-end and stored on a registered relay node for a retention period of up to 7 days.
  4. Once the recipient agent brings their daemon online, it automatically synchronizes with the relay network to fetch pending data.
  5. The recipient retrieves pending messages from their local inbox and can then clear the queue after processing.

Pilot Relay Setup

To utilize this skill, you must have the pilot-protocol skill and the pilotctl binary installed and accessible in your system PATH. Follow these steps to initialize the environment:

# Start the pilotctl daemon to enable network connectivity
pilotctl --json daemon start

# Verify that the daemon is running correctly
pilotctl --json daemon status

Pilot Relay Data Schema & Taxonomy

Pilot Relay manages data through a structured inbox and relay queue. All transmitted content is encrypted, and metadata is handled according to the following taxonomy:

Property Description Format
timestamp The time the message was sent or received ISO 8601
content The encrypted payload of the message String
hostname The destination or source peer identifier String
items Array of messages currently stored in the inbox Array

Messages are retained for 7 days on relay nodes before automatic expiration to maintain network efficiency.

Pilot Relay Advanced Features

  • Automatic delivery retries with at-least-once delivery guarantees for mission-critical agent tasks.
  • End-to-end encryption ensuring relay nodes can store messages without having access to the plain-text content.
  • Ordered delivery per-sender to maintain logical sequence in complex Openclaw Skills automation workflows.
  • Support for symmetric NAT traversal via rendezvous server relay points, enabling communication in restricted network environments.
