What is Verified Agent Identity?

The Verified Agent Identity skill is a professional-grade solution for managing self-sovereign identities (SSI) within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem. By leveraging the Billions Network ERC-8004 and iden3 protocols, this skill allows AI agents to establish a verifiable presence on-chain. It effectively bridges the gap between autonomous agents and human accountability by facilitating secure identity linking and cryptographic attestation.

This integration ensures that every action taken by an agent can be cryptographically traced back to a verified identity. It is an essential component for developers building complex multi-agent systems where trust, authentication, and ownership are foundational requirements for secure operations.

Verified Agent Identity Use Cases

  • Linking an AI agent identity to a specific human owner for accountability and governance.
  • Signing cryptographic challenges to prove ownership of a decentralized identifier (DID).
  • Authenticating agents in shared environments using secure JWT tokens.
  • Verifying the signatures of other agents or users to establish secure and trusted communication channels.

How Verified Agent Identity Works

  1. The skill initiates by checking for an existing local identity using the stored DID entries in the local configuration.
  2. If no identity is found, it generates a new Ethereum-based identity and saves the cryptographic material to the local Key Management System.
  3. For verification purposes, a random challenge is generated or received from a requesting party.
  4. The agent signs this challenge using its private key stored securely within the Openclaw Skills data directory.
  5. The signed token or JWS is then verified against the Billions Attestation Registry to confirm the cryptographic link between the agent and its human owner.

Verified Agent Identity Setup

To implement this identity system within your Openclaw Skills environment, execute the following configuration steps:

# Navigate to the scripts directory and install necessary dependencies
cd scripts && npm install && cd ..

# Create a new decentralized identity (DID)
node scripts/createNewEthereumIdentity.js

# Link your agent identity to a human owner by signing a challenge
node scripts/linkHumanToAgent.js --challenge '{"name": "AgentName", "description": "AI persona"}'

Verified Agent Identity Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes all sensitive identity data within the $HOME/.openclaw/billions directory. The following table details the metadata taxonomy:

File Description
kms.json Contains private keys, encrypted if a master key is provided.
defaultDid.json Stores the primary DID identifier and associated public keys.
challenges.json Maintains a history of generated authentication challenges.
credentials.json A repository for issued verifiable credentials.
identities.json A local registry of all identities managed by the skill.

Verified Agent Identity Advanced Features

  • Support for encrypted Key Management Systems (KMS) using the BILLIONS_NETWORK_MASTER_KMS_KEY for enhanced security.
  • Automated generation of verification URLs for seamless human-to-agent identity linking.
  • Native integration with the Billions ERC-8004 Registry for decentralized agent registration and discovery.
  • Robust signature verification capabilities to validate third-party identities within Openclaw Skills workflows.
