What is ProtonMail Skill?

The ProtonMail Skill provides a bridge between the highly secure, encrypted ProtonMail environment and the automation capabilities of Openclaw Skills. By utilizing local IMAP bridges, this skill allows users to programmatically interact with their inbox while maintaining the end-to-end encryption benefits of Proton. It is designed for developers who need to integrate secure communications into their AI-driven workflows without compromising privacy.

Whether you are looking to build a custom email dashboard or automate your response systems, this skill provides the necessary CLI tools and scripts to fetch, filter, and summarize your communications effectively. It bridges the gap between secure storage and actionable data for modern agentic workflows.

ProtonMail Skill Use Cases

  • Creating automated daily email digests for high-priority senders.
  • Searching through encrypted archives using CLI-based keyword queries.
  • Monitoring specific mailboxes for urgent notifications using Openclaw Skills logic.
  • Automating the sorting of newsletters and system notifications via Sieve filters.
  • Integrating secure email access into a centralized AI dashboard.

How ProtonMail Skill Works

  1. Deploy an IMAP bridge (either the official Proton Bridge via Docker or the headless hydroxide client) to handle decryption locally.
  2. Authenticate the bridge with your ProtonMail credentials to establish a secure local IMAP server.
  3. Configure the skill environment variables with your local bridge connection details and credentials.
  4. Execute Python-based CLI commands to list mailboxes, fetch unread messages, or read specific email contents.
  5. Optionally run the daily scan utility to parse headers and subjects for priority keywords and trusted senders.

ProtonMail Skill Setup

1. Set up the IMAP Bridge

Choose either the official Bridge or hydroxide:

Option A: Proton Bridge (Docker)

docker run -d --name=protonmail-bridge -v protonmail:/root -p 143:143 -p 1025:25 --restart=unless-stopped shenxn/protonmail-bridge
docker run --rm -it -v protonmail:/root shenxn/protonmail-bridge init

Option B: hydroxide (Headless)

git clone https://github.com/emersion/hydroxide.git
cd hydroxide && go build ./cmd/hydroxide
./hydroxide auth [email protected]
./hydroxide serve

2. Configuration

Create a configuration file at ~/.config/protonmail-bridge/config.env:

PROTONMAIL_HOST=127.0.0.1
PROTONMAIL_PORT=143
[email protected]
PROTONMAIL_PASS=your-bridge-password

ProtonMail Skill Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill processes IMAP data structures and provides structured access to the following entities:

Entity Description
Mailboxes A list of available IMAP folders (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, etc.)
Headers Metadata including Sender, Subject, and Timestamp used for filtering
Content Decrypted email body text retrieved via the read command
Daily Scan A synthesized summary of emails flagged by the importance algorithm

ProtonMail Skill Advanced Features

  • Multi-language support for urgency detection (English, German, and Dutch) within the daily-scan script.
  • Custom Sieve filter integration to pre-process emails on the ProtonMail server before they reach Openclaw Skills.
  • Flexible deployment options supporting both containerized environments and lightweight headless setups.
  • Automated importance flagging based on a configurable list of trusted domains and urgent keywords.
