What is Proxmox VE Automation?

This skill provides a powerful interface for interacting with Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment), an open-source platform for enterprise virtualization. It leverages the PVE REST API to give AI agents and developers complete control over QEMU/KVM virtual machines and LXC containers. By integrating this into your Openclaw Skills library, you can automate complex infrastructure tasks that previously required manual intervention in the Proxmox web interface.

Beyond basic lifecycle operations, the skill handles storage management, networking configuration, and cluster-wide tasks. It is designed with developer safety in mind, offering patterns for resource validation and dry-run execution to prevent over-allocation or accidental deletions in production environments.

Proxmox VE Automation Use Cases

  • Automated provisioning of development environments using Cloud-Init for rapid deployment.
  • Bulk lifecycle operations such as starting or shutting down groups of VMs based on triggers.
  • Continuous backup and snapshot management to maintain disaster recovery standards.
  • Dynamic scaling of LXC container resources based on real-time performance metrics.
  • Automated hardware passthrough configuration for GPU-intensive workloads or specialized networking.

How Proxmox VE Automation Works

  1. The skill establishes a secure connection to the Proxmox VE host using either API Tokens or Ticket-based authentication.
  2. Commands are translated into REST API calls targeting specific nodes, virtual machines (VMs), or containers.
  3. For write operations, the skill captures the Unique Process ID (UPID) returned by the Proxmox host.
  4. It polls the task status endpoint to monitor progress and verify successful execution of the operation.
  5. Detailed JSON responses are processed to return resource statuses or error messages back to the environment.

Proxmox VE Automation Setup

To deploy this skill within your Openclaw Skills collection, ensure you have network access to your PVE host on port 8006 (default).

Create an API token in the Proxmox Web UI (Datacenter -> Permissions -> API Tokens) and export the following environment variables:

export PVE_HOST="pve.example.com"
export PVE_TOKEN_ID="automation"
export PVE_TOKEN_SECRET="aaaaaaaa-bbbb-cccc-dddd-eeeeeeeeeeee"

You can also configure custom ports if your management interface is not on the default 8006.

Proxmox VE Automation Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill interacts with the core Proxmox data hierarchy, organizing information into the following schema:

Resource Description Key Attributes
Nodes Physical cluster members status, cpu, memory, uptime
QEMU Virtual Machines vmid, name, status, cores, memory
LXC Linux Containers vmid, hostname, status, ostemplate
Storage Data backends type, content, total, used, avail
Tasks Ongoing operations upid, status, exitstatus, user

Proxmox VE Automation Advanced Features

  • High Availability (HA) group management for automated failover of critical services.
  • Live migration capabilities for running VMs across cluster nodes with shared storage.
  • Comprehensive Firewall configuration at both the cluster and individual virtual resource level.
  • Integration with ACME for automated SSL/TLS certificate management across the cluster.
  • Advanced PCI and USB passthrough automation for specialized hardware access.
  • Scheduled backup jobs with custom cron expressions and automated notification webhooks.
