What is NotebookLM CLI Automation?

Openclaw Skills for NotebookLM gives developers and power users a CLI-first way to manage AI-backed notebooks without leaving the terminal. Create notebooks, ingest URLs or pasted text as sources, ask context-aware questions, and pull concise summaries directly from the notebook context.

Beyond retrieval and Q&A, Openclaw Skills streamlines content production by generating slide decks, quizzes, flashcards, infographics, reports, audio, video, mind maps, and data tables. It is ideal when you need a repeatable, scriptable workflow for research synthesis, lesson prep, and fast knowledge conversion from source material.

NotebookLM CLI Automation Use Cases

Use Openclaw Skills when you want a repeatable NotebookLM workflow from the terminal.

  • Create new notebooks for research, lesson planning, or content projects
  • Import web pages or pasted text as notebook sources
  • Ask context-aware questions about notebook content
  • Generate summaries, translations, and study notes
  • Produce slide decks, quizzes, flashcards, infographics, reports, audio, video, mind maps, or data tables
  • Poll artifact jobs and download finished outputs in the right format
  • Manage multiple notebooks from a single CLI

How NotebookLM CLI Automation Works

  1. Install notebooklm and authenticate with notebooklm login so the CLI can access your NotebookLM account.
  2. Create a notebook or select one from notebooklm list, then set it as the active context with notebooklm use <notebook_id>.
  3. Ingest content with notebooklm source add using a URL or pasted text, and wait for processing with notebooklm source wait when needed.
  4. Query the notebook with notebooklm ask, request a notebooklm summary, or start a fresh thread with notebooklm ask --new.
  5. Generate learning artifacts with notebooklm generate for slide decks, quizzes, flashcards, and other supported artifact types.
  6. Poll and download finished artifacts with notebooklm artifact poll, notebooklm artifact list, and notebooklm download once processing is complete.

NotebookLM CLI Automation Setup

Openclaw Skills requires the notebooklm CLI and an authenticated account.

  1. Install the package.
pip install notebooklm
  1. Sign in through the browser-based login flow.
notebooklm login
  1. Verify the account is accessible and inspect your notebooks.
notebooklm list
notebooklm status
  1. Create or select a notebook before ingesting sources.
notebooklm create "English Grammar Notes"
notebooklm use <notebook_id>
  1. Add a source and wait for ingestion to complete.
notebooklm source add "https://example.com/article"
notebooklm source wait <source_id>

NotebookLM CLI Automation Data Schema & Taxonomy

NotebookLM organizes work around four primary entities:

Entity Identifier Purpose Common commands
Notebook notebook_id Top-level workspace that groups sources, chats, and generated content create, list, use, summary
Source source_id Input content such as a URL or pasted text source add, source list, source wait
Conversation current notebook context Scoped Q&A session bound to the selected notebook ask, ask --new, summary
Artifact artifact_id Generated deliverable produced from notebook content generate, artifact poll, artifact list, download

Artifact taxonomy

Type Output notes
slide-deck Download as PPTX or PDF
quiz Practice questions for review or assessment
flashcards Study prompts for memorization
infographic Visual summary
report Detailed written output
audio Audio artifact
video Video artifact
mind-map Concept map / topic graph
data-table Structured tabular output

Metadata and runtime behavior

  • The active notebook context is set with notebooklm use <notebook_id> and can be inspected with notebooklm status.
  • ask --json returns machine-readable output for downstream automation.
  • Artifact generation is asynchronous, so status must be polled before download.
  • The skill does not prescribe a local project folder structure; notebooks live in NotebookLM and artifacts are downloaded on demand.

NotebookLM CLI Automation Advanced Features

Openclaw Skills is especially effective for scripting repeatable NotebookLM workflows.

  • Context switching across multiple notebooks with notebooklm list, use, and status
  • Multi-source ingestion with source add and source wait for reliable processing
  • Machine-readable Q&A via ask --json for automation and parsing
  • Fresh conversation threads with ask --new to isolate a new response context
  • Asynchronous artifact lifecycle management with generate, artifact poll, artifact list, and download
  • Broad output coverage across slide decks, quizzes, flashcards, infographics, reports, audio, video, mind maps, and data tables
  • Flexible export handling for slide decks in PPTX or PDF formats
