What is Read Later Pro?

Read Later Pro is a comprehensive terminal-based command-line interface and automation skill designed to help developers and power users curate their own offline knowledge bases. By extracting clean, distraction-free article content directly from any URL, the tool strips away ads, banners, and scripts, leaving only high-quality readable text. This tool is part of the broader registry of Openclaw Skills, empowering users to integrate offline reading workflows directly into their local environments or AI assistant setups.

With native support for popular export formats like Markdown, PDF, EPUB, and HTML, this skill bridges the gap between web consumption and personal knowledge management. Whether you want to back up web content, prepare reading material for e-readers, or pipe cleaned markdown content straight into AI pipelines, this tool delivers structured, reliable offline access to the web's best articles.

Read Later Pro Use Cases

  • Offline Knowledge Management: Build a local database of technical articles and documentation in Markdown format for offline study or personal knowledge bases.
  • Distraction-Free Reading: Convert cluttered web pages into clean PDFs, EPUBs, or HTML files to enjoy reading without ads, banners, and cookie popups.
  • AI RAG & Pipeline Feeding: Feed clean, structured Markdown text from web articles directly into AI tools, search indexes, or language models.
  • Read-Later Syncing: Migrate or back up articles from popular services like Pocket or Instapaper to keep a permanent offline copy of your bookmarks.
  • Batch Document Archival: Bulk-save a list of URLs from bookmarks or text files to build a targeted research library instantly.

How Read Later Pro Works

  1. Article Extraction: The user provides a URL or list of URLs. The skill crawls the webpage, bypassing distractions to retrieve the core text, main images, and key metadata.
  2. Format Conversion: The extracted content is transformed into the user's preferred format—Markdown, PDF, HTML, or EPUB—using local script adapters.
  3. Structured Storage: Captured articles are saved in organized directories with clear naming, downloading images locally for real-world offline reliability, alongside a metadata.json file.
  4. Organization and Search: Users can categorize, tag, and perform full-text searches across saved articles using built-in command-line tools.
  5. Archive & Sync: Old articles are easily archived, deleted, or synchronized back and forth with third-party bookmarking services.

Read Later Pro Data Schema & Taxonomy

Article Storage Architecture

Articles are structured into isolated subdirectories named after the article slug inside the output folder.

File / Directory Description
article-slug/ Container folder generated for each individual saved web article.
article.md Main parsed article text, clean and structured in Markdown.
article.pdf Generated PDF file (if PDF format was requested during extraction).
metadata.json Stores article metadata, including original Title, URL, Date, and user-assigned tags.
images/ Subfolder containing downloaded images from the article, guaranteeing true offline rendering.

Metadata JSON Taxonomy

The metadata.json stores details to facilitate advanced search query indexing:

  • title: Extracted title of the article.
  • url: Original URL source.
  • saved_at: Timestamp indicating when the content was captured.
  • tags: Array of string tags assigned manually or imported from other services.
  • word_count: Total parsed word count of the main content body.

Read Later Pro Advanced Features

  • Experimental Paywall Bypass: Use the --full-content flag to attempt bypassing paywalls and capturing complete articles from restricted domains.
  • Local Asset Portability: Downloads and stores images locally within the article structure to enable true offline viewing without hotlinking.
  • Multi-Format Batch Converter: Effortlessly convert previously stored Markdown articles to high-quality EPUB or PDF files using the built-in convert_format.py utility.
  • Hierarchical Tagging: Organize large article catalogs using nested tagging schemes such as tech/ai or tech/programming.
  • Scriptable Workflows: Developers can build automations using direct script access to extract_article.py or manage_library.py to embed offline reading capabilities into modern custom pipelines.
