What is Referral Handoff Reader?

Referral Handoff Reader is an end-to-end business workflow skill that takes a referral form JSON input, computes a referral digest, and creates or updates a referral packet in a specified local output directory. It combines identification and downstream packet creation in one executable workflow, making it a practical choice for teams exploring Openclaw Skills for repeatable business operations.

Delivery is optional and explicit: configure SMTP to send a message or an HTTP endpoint for registration or submission effects. Without delivery configuration, the skill records the business artifact locally and contacts no external service. When delivery is configured, the run returns a receipt describing the outcome.

Referral Handoff Reader Use Cases

  • Convert a referral form JSON file into a digest and handoff packet.
  • Create or update a local referral business artifact for review or recordkeeping.
  • Send a referral message through configured SMTP.
  • Register or submit a referral through a configured HTTP delivery endpoint.
  • Run a repeatable referral workflow from the command line and inspect its delivery outcome.
  • Use Openclaw Skills to keep local-only processing separate from explicitly configured external delivery.

How Referral Handoff Reader Works

  1. Read the upstream referral_form_json input provided with --input.
  2. Run the upstream identification stage to validate and process the input, producing a referral_digest.
  3. Pass the digest to the downstream operation, which computes a referral_packet_id.
  4. Create or update the local referral packet beneath the explicitly supplied --output-dir.
  5. If SMTP or HTTP delivery is configured, perform the declared delivery action and return a receipt with an outcome such as sent, delivered, failed, or unconfigured.
  6. Report delivery errors with a nonzero exit code; when no delivery target is configured, keep the artifact local and contact no external service.

Referral Handoff Reader Setup

Run the workflow with Python and provide an input file and output directory. The repository includes examples/request.json as an input example and examples/expected.json to illustrate the output shape; runtime paths and receipt identifiers are omitted from the expected example.

python scripts/run.py --input examples/request.json --output-dir ./workspace

To enable delivery, either configure the relevant environment variables or provide a delivery configuration file:

python scripts/run.py --input examples/request.json --output-dir ./workspace --delivery-config delivery.json

For SMTP message delivery, configure CLAWHUB_SMTP_HOST and, as needed, CLAWHUB_SMTP_PORT, CLAWHUB_MAIL_FROM, CLAWHUB_SMTP_USERNAME, and CLAWHUB_SMTP_PASSWORD. Alternatively, provide an SMTP configuration object with smtp_host, smtp_port, and from_addr in the delivery config.

For HTTP registration or submission, configure CLAWHUB_DELIVERY_ENDPOINT and optionally CLAWHUB_DELIVERY_API_KEY, or provide an endpoint object in the delivery config. Delivery target, credentials, and recipient are supplied explicitly at runtime. Without delivery configuration, the workflow runs locally only.

Referral Handoff Reader Data Schema & Taxonomy

The workflow consumes referral form JSON and produces a two-stage result. The source documents these named business fields and artifacts:

Item Role
referral_form_json Upstream input read by the identification stage
referral_digest Identification result passed to the downstream operation
referral_packet_id Business result computed during packet creation
Local referral packet Business artifact created or updated under --output-dir
delivery receipt Runtime outcome when delivery is configured; may report sent, delivered, failed, or unconfigured

The skill does not specify the internal fields of the referral form or packet schema in its documentation. Its implementation is organized as follows:

  • scripts/upstream/: identification stage, including operation.py, validation.py, and config.json.
  • scripts/downstream/: delivery stage and real delivery implementation, including deliver_effect.
  • scripts/run.py: complete workflow runner.
  • source-map.json: provenance information for both extracted stages.
  • examples/request.json and examples/expected.json: example input and representative output shape.

Referral Handoff Reader Advanced Features

  • Combines identification and downstream packet creation in a single executable workflow.
  • Supports optional SMTP message delivery and HTTP registration or submission effects.
  • Accepts delivery settings through environment variables or an explicit --delivery-config file.
  • Keeps local artifact creation available without external delivery credentials or service calls.
  • Returns a delivery receipt for configured actions and uses a nonzero exit for reported errors.
  • Includes separate upstream and downstream implementations plus source provenance metadata.
